Memories of Brice Carlson
« on: April 21, 2011, 07:36:25 AM »
I'm betting that most of you won't know who Brice Carlson was.  Back in early 2000's, PLA's primary form of communication was an email list.  Sure, the UPL Forums were huge (seriously, they were back then!) but even bigger was the email list, often receiving more than 1,000 posts a day.  A lot of GOOD posts, even, related to fun PLA stuff.  Take a look at our old list page for the "latest" news about the list and for some amazing drawings of the list users by 3rdworm.  There's even a drawing of Brice!

Brice showed up and can be best described as the z09 of 2000, if you can remember who z09 was.  Lots of trolling by an extremely annoying kid.  Brice constantly dared us to try and track him down and harass him, because he was certain that would be impossible.  After a few weeks of everyone being really annoyed with this guy, I did it.  Brice showed up in our IRC room, which gave me his IP address.  He used a high-speed connection (new to most people at the time) and I called up his internet provider and talked them into giving me his parents name, address and phone number.  Since I never throw anything away, I still have my text file on Brice from where I tracked him down.  Here it is, slightly edited:

I can't remember much of what we did to Brice.  Lots of prank calls to him and his parents, I'm sure.  In that file of mine, it says that his grandma changed her number, so maybe her too.  He may have been living with her.  I remember I pranked some relatives of his once on their cell phone and they thought they hung up on me, but I sat there and listened to them, driving around while they talked about me and Brice.  (I'm sure I still have a sound file of some of that and I will post it here soon.)

That list page quotes Brice as saying he'll “do anything for you guys not to have other people calling here” so I'm guessing I was using one of my automated harassment perl scripts to cause hundreds of phone calls to happen at his house.  I think Brice moved from Utah to Michigan at some point, because I was called several times by the police in both states.  I had a great time yelling at the police and telling them that Brice was harassing me and they better make him stop.

I think in the end, Brice won this battle because he had our Yahoo email list shut down forever.  His family had changed their phone numbers, so I posted the new ones to the list.  Brice showed this to Yahoo and they immediately killed our list and all its archives, including all the crazy-fun shit we were having with Brice.  It was a sad day.

From what I remember, I stopped messing with Brice soon after that.  I could have kept at it, but by then I was too busy stalking Wacky Morning DJ.  I did a bunch of searching on Facebook while writing this post, searching for Brice and other family members from my small text file on him.  I wasn't able to confirm that any of the people I found were the people form my file.  They all lived in the wrong states or were the wrong ages or their profiles were just too private to see anything useful.  One of these days, I'll search my other computer for any prank calls or other sound files from the Brice Incident of 2001.

Anyone else remember anything about Brice or the things we did to him?

I think I had left the list by the time you guys were harrassing the hell out of him, but before that when I was taking over Goldeneye's e-mail accounts, Brice ended up finding a way into WraithTech's geocities page. They had Wraithtech.com set up to forward to the geocities page and Brice changed the front page to something like "Hacked by Brice Carlson." That's the only thing I really remember except him always going out of his way to annoy everyone and try to antagonize people.

On a side note, I had forgotten about your "files" you keep on everyone, Rbcp. My own mediocre attempt at humor has been highly amusing to myself..
