Vista came out to day. I OVERFLOWING WITH EXCITEMENT!!11! Just wondering what people's thoughts on XP1.1..err...ummm..I mean to say Vista.

Just thought I'd add this review from the reliable CNET:

The good: Windows Vista Ultimate does improve some features within Windows XP; fewer system crashes than Windows XP; Windows Vista offers better built-in support options.

The bad: Windows Vista Ultimate does not put Search on the desktop (it's buried within applications, within the Start Menu); optimized only for the Microsoft Windows ecosystem (for example, RSS feeds from Internet Explorer 7 get preferential treatment); there's simply too much and not all of it is implemented properly; no new software yet written exclusively for Windows Vista; and there are too many editions of Windows Vista.

The bottom line: Windows Vista is essentially warmed-over Windows XP. If you're currently happy with Windows XP SP2, we see no compelling reason to upgrade. On the other hand, if you need a new computer right now, Windows Vista is stable enough for everyday use.

I don't see any reason to upgrade.  What's it got to offer, really?  I don't see what makes it better than XP, other than the fancy new 3-D interface, which is sure to slow your system down a little.  Besides, I've been really happy with XP.

I think I'll just see XP out until its bitter end. XP seems to be working fine so I could do without paying 160$ or whatever it is just for the eye candy 3D interface (and probably would need to update my graphics card as well).

But recently my XP has been acting up... Something about my Device Driver, which I'm pretty sure is updated to the most recent one. Whenever I log on it shows some error message, then soon after shuts down and restarts itself numerous times until it self fixes. And whenever I try to go into the Settings thing at start up by hitting F8, to try some fixes I read, nothing happens.  (I have a Radeon 9200 if anybody might know what the hell the problem is or how to fix it)

Wipe out your computer and do a clean XP install.  I bet that fixes it.

Two bad things I've heard about Vista:

1. The DRM is Nazi-like.

2. If you only pay for the upgrade, you have to have XP installed on your system.  You can't just stick in your XP disc or put in your old XP code.  XP has to be on your system.  That sucks.

My friend found a working torrent about a month ago, and has been running it with no problems, dual boot on his laptop. More cracks should be coming out soon too.

It's XP, but more system-heavy, harder to see, and explorer doesn't have an address bar.

Plus you have to click "allow" a lot.

For the first few years it will be so broken and decrepit that it would be utterly stupid to use. After that, it will still be expensive and mostly worthless. SP1, SP2, SP3. Eventually you won't be able to run anything not developed by Microsoft and it will self-destruct if you try to dual-boot.

I personally solely support 500+ students, at a university, with their IT needs which include their personal computers. In all honestly, Vista can sometimes be cool to mess around with, but 99.5% of the time I would recommend individuals staying with XP.

Have you tired restarting your machine? I can't remember if I had to do that or not, but I know disabling that shitty service did the trick.
