Why does everyone wear BLUE jeans? Why not green jeans? Or yellow jeans? There's multiple colors of regular pants, so why aren't multiple colored jeans acceptable? Sure, I know white jeans were all the rage for awhile in the 80's. In Jr. High I even owned a pair of gray jeans. But in the end, it all comes back to blue jeans. They've always been blue. Why?
Dear Brad,
Being as frugal as you are, I believe you will understand Mr. Levi's motivations when he decided to make jeans blue because it was the cheapest way to make them. The first jeans were made with actual indigo plant dye, and unfortunately, orange trees just ended up leaving sticky stains on the pants and never dying them quite right. I don't think cactii made jeans very green either.
Besides being the cheapest, it was also the fastest color to dye clothes and was really popular back in the day.
More recently (esp with this horrible 80's comeback), jeans are available in pretty much every color if you have the money for them now that they are chemically dyed... but since blue as been the most popular and is so culturally accepted... economies of scale dictate that because of the higher demand for blue jeans, the cheaper they are to make and the cheaper they are to buy. Damn that Levi for making conformists out of all of us.
If you'd wear some yellow jeans, I think I could be convinced to send you some
Love,
jammie
