Keyless entry remotes don't use infrared, but rather RF.

I came acrossed some plans for a sniffer box that would capture remote frequencies, like Mobile Speedpasses, and Benz remote keys. Sad to say i've lost them, does anyone know where i could get those prints?

IE: I want someone to give me illegal information I can use against them.

You might as well ask "Hey, who here has committed or plans to commit a cool crime?"

You know what smartie? When you call a number and get an automated response, you just made that system make a function, under which is against federal law, if you have no legit reason for calling. People help one another out, knowledge of it does not make it illegal, and by reading your past post you've made on the PLA as a whole, you should be the LAST person to be saying something like that, Mr. I Don't Know How This Works....

It does have to deal with capturing remote frequencies, and if you wanna pheer somemore, I was going to put the information on AIDS. So roll that up, and stop being a Tron.

There's a hazy line somewhere that, once crossed, will result in the site being shut down or RBCP getting in trouble. Maybe we should have hidden boards for that stuff...

Yes that is a very good idea, somebody should set up boards like that for things like this.

NECROMANCY!!!

Seriously, get off your pedestal. Had you replied, I don't know... 2-5 months ago, I may have taken what you said to heart, but now you just look like a jackass. I was going to explain how dangerous information is dangerous whether it's used or not, but fuck it. You waited 6 months for your brilliant comeback. I'll teach you in a year or so.

You know, I'm not so sure.

I'm not really a moral absolutist anymore, so I don't ascribe such distinctions as "right" and "wrong" to ideas in general. Information can be used for positive or negative purposes (the distinction residing always in the eye of the beholder).

Even something as clear cut as instructions for constructing weaponry isn't so simple when you consider the possibility that someone will one day use this information to defend themselves against malicious outside forces. Yes of course  the same information could easily be used to massacre a kindergarten class, but if you accept that security by obscurity is never 100% effective, there's little you can do about it. At most you extend the search time (assuming a reasonably intelligent or at least reasonably persistent psychotic searcher) by a few minutes.

Brad's potential liability aside, I don't think that security by obscurity has historically worked too well (in fact I think this point is a core value of the hacker mentality as I understand it).

Let me know if that made any sense, I wrote that quickly.

I'm just saying it's stupid to post something like that in a section of the forums that's open to unregistered users, spiders, and other, non-leet members, since it's opening up a whole world of liability. I don't give a shit if someone knows how to make remote keys. I'd just be pissed if having the knowledge to make remote keys caused this site to get un-wanted extra attention (how many of our new registered users are spooks, do you think?) or even to get the forums shut down, even temporarily. I don't know what else I'd do at work, and I think for that I'd cry.

I do agree that this stuff belongs on those other boards, and it helps to cut down on those fuckers who register to say 'how do i hack myapce and get my girlfreinds new phone number i have a restraining order' and never post again.

you know if it's just that i had not posted me thread on a "private" board then fine, where are the "private" boards. will Brad get in trouble for my question? no. will the PLA Forums go down for my question? no. i believe this is why the phreaking scene is nearly dead, the motivational factors are being removed from forums, not just this one. there are "other" forums that have content plain in sight talking about far worse stuff than on here with remote keys. all knowledge has the potential to be use negatively, like tachyon stated. the real question here is how far will you go to censor it....

Maybe we should get some crappy free boards that we could register anonymously and post about illegal shit on them?

I don't see Brad getting busted over this (who would do it?), I think the real things he's worried about are like people getting phone calls because some idiot posted their phone number.

I might be too paranoid if its on the web somewhere and the big bad man somehow found me. Aren't the laws in Canada a lot less strict? :-D Maybe a small thread on a foreign forum somewhere might do the trick?

10 years ago i built a garage door scanner with a circuit i found on the net.
back then pretty much every garage door had a set of dip switches labeled 1-10 or 1-12
basicly what i did was take an old garage door opener and desolder the dip switch set. then you soldered all the    ground points together then the "scanner" was 2 IC chips one is a 555 8-pin timer chip that you regulated the speed of the output pulse to a 12 decade counter. that chip was 16 pin and it would count binary simulating the hundreds of combonations of dip switches. i pimped it out with led display of 1-12 that would show the simulated combonations. led on equals 1 or on, an led that is not lit was a 0 or off.
it took about 3 minutes to run through all the combonations.

this information is 10 years old but there are still alot of old ass garage doors and was fairly easy to make. the problem is that now there is probably rolling codes and frecuencies. so i would not count on a device like this working on anything newer than 5 or 6 years old.

tecvoid

There are two types of garage door openers commonly in use, standard and rolling code. The standard one is easy to copy. Just get a programmable garage door remote (Google it) and follow the instructions. A rolling code is harder. You can't just copy it when it is being used normally. You need to push a programming button that will be somewhere inside the garage. The ones I have seen were located in a box attached to the ceiling of the garage, but they could be anywhere that is part of the opener, depending on the model. You also have to use a remote that is compatible with that specific brand of opener, but most universal garage door remotes work with most major brands.

Here's the schematic I think tecvoid is talking about.
