what collage (sic) do you go to?
I am at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Yeah, I'm poor and go to a state school.
I'm actually a triple major, with a BFA in Viola, BA in Music Education (dual emphasis Instrumental and General music) and BS in Music Composition (with an emphasis on post-tonal music).
If you are willing to travel to go to school and want to major in music, I'd strongly consider:
University of Indiana (ESPECIALLY if you want to compose)(they have a conservatory)
UW-O (We have one of the only BA/BFA degree programs for Recording Technology)
Northwestern (Chicago, IL)(they have a conservatory)
Chicago College (with what's acknowledged as the best musicology program in the nation)
Minneapolis(they have a conservatory)
University of WI (Madison, WI)
Peabody (they have a conservatory)
If you want to go to school as a way to study an instrument in-depth, get performance experience, and work up to the level necessary to get your M.A., a conservatory would be one of your better bets. If you play a string instrument, find a teacher versed in the Kodaly method, preferably somebody from Eastern Europe. Many graduates of the Franz Lizst academy and the Bela Bartok conservatory are in America teaching right now, and they're probably the best pedagogs in the field.
If you want to do digital sound or production, your best bet is a technological school. If you also want the arts background and a music degree, consider UW-O. It only takes a year to be a WI resident.
If you're seriously willing to travel in order to get a good education (and can pick up languages easily), go to Poland, Romania, Hungary, or even western Russia.
