Never tried that, but I did use the issue on BBS hacking to great effect one time.

You mean the salt water hack?  I got that to work several times.  But this was in the early 90's.  I think they fixed that exploit on most machines by now.

The only really useful hack I know for vending machines is reaching inside and blocking the door on those ones with the big glass front and the conveyor belt inside to get two or three drinks for the price of one. I've lately been looking at vending machine locks and all the ones at work have a fairly simple looking cylinder lock (to me anyway, I'm a lockpicking n00blet).

most come in 7-8 pin variety.

Look like this most often. They are easy to pick if you have the right tools but they are about $80 each last time i checked 7 or 8 pin models.

uhh, one of those picks are like $200 the last time i checked..  Also remember the dumb 4,2,3,1 hack with the buttons?  You can see how much money it holds, what bottles are left ect.. you can also make it say "ERRoR" and go tell the clerck it ate your money saying that for a free coke ;)
just press the buttons (from top to bottom ,  1 -> * ) 4,2,3,1 and press the first four buttons to find the "ERRoR" message.

I'd say that 200 dollars for a pick that could get you into most any vending machine pay for itself rather quickly.

I picked up a 6 and 7 pin pick for $65 each. Way too overpriced, but well worth the money.

How does the pick work, does it just push all the little pins up at once? Is there any skill involved or does it just slide in? Is there any chance of doing that manually?

Here are the picks I have.

http://www.lockpickshop.com/TPXS-78.html

After you use them a few times, it's so easy a monkey could do it blindfolded.

You just push the pins on the pick out, line pick up with the lock, insert pick and turn.

That's cool, I may get those and start a lucrative part-time job! Also, I think I heard a while back that cheap bike locks could be beat with nothing more than a plastic pen cartridge, has anyone else heard this?

Ya, the old kryptonite bike locks.
Still works on some just not kryptonites, because they got majorly embarrased by the whole thing. Any good bike theif should have a pen pick. It's compact, works on many locks, and it often looks like you're merely opening the bike lock.
