Sprint mobile voice mail diverting thread (now includes free calling method)

I think this only works with a Sprint mobile phone.

1) From your Sprint phone, call your voicemail.
2) Enter your password (if needed).
3) If you have any voicemails, wait for them to finish so you get to the main menu.  If not, just skip to the next step.
4) Press 8 at the main menu.  You will be prompted to enter a phone number (including area code), then #.
5) Obviously, enter a number!  Then press # like you were told to.
6) Congratulations, you've diverted.  Test it by calling an ANAC from your phone normally, then using the above method.

If it's okay, I can post my ANI I get when diverting.  If I find out it's bad I'll take it down: 281-530-4037.  Curiously, according to telcodata it's owned by Southwestern Bell and not Sprint.  And calling it gives a "you have reached a number that is disconnected or is no longer in service" message.

Something else interesting: Free calls.

So, Sprint-to-Sprint calls are free.  You can use this, along with a neat feature, to dial out while still in a Sprint-to-Sprint call.

1) Dial 11+any Sprint number.  This is their feature to directly access someone's voicemail, for leaving a message without ringing them up.  This counts as a Sprint-to-Sprint call and doesn't cost minutes.
2) Press **.  This allows you to enter another voicemail number, to access your voicemail.
3) So, enter your number, then #, like the voice tells you to.
4) From there, follow Step 2 of the above guide.

Congratulations, now you can divert, without even paying for the call.  Cheapass.


I wonder why Sprint allows you to dial out from checking your voicemail.  Convenience?  Like, if someone says "Hey it's John, call me back at 123-456-7890", you could press 8 and enter that number without pressing your phone's End key?  I guess that's the case, but it seems kind of frivolous.


And it seems obvious, but I checked, and you can't use the "Voice Mail Place Call Feature" by calling your phone from a landine, ignoring the call so it goes to voicemail, then entering your password.

Is there any way to do this from a non-sprint mobile phone? What is the number for the sprint voicemail service? Then, I assume that you would just need to spoof CID. Thanks, amok.

the binrev link I posted says that "spoofing" will let you do it, so take that as you will.

I think, calling from a landline, there's two options for calling.  YMMV, if what I've read is correct.  One is 11+number (which some people say works fine from a non-Sprint phone).  The other is NPA+Exchange of your phone*, + "MAIL" (6245).  I dunno what to do from there, since I haven't tried it that way.  I'll try this from home later (I'm at work right now).

*I'm guessing use the NPA+exchange that sprint uses in your area natively, since my number is ported from Verizon, and I don't think that would work.


EDIT: why do they have it?  The binrev post says that you can press it to call whoever left a voicemail, so I guess that's its primary use.  Sprint stores the number of whoever leaves you a voicemail, so I guess it would be convenient to just press 8 and call that person back automatically, rather than hanging up and doing it.  It still seems silly to be able to call any number (well I dunno about "any"... hmm can you call foreign numbers??) from it though, since pressing end and inputting the number and pressing send on your phone is the same number of keypresses to press 8, input the number, and then press # from the voicemail system.

SPoofing to a Sprint voicemail might allow you into the mailbox but it won't let you dial-out.
