Phreak's dream, Qwest's nightmare
« on: July 12, 2007, 09:58:19 PM »
I went out back to the alley to dump some trash and happened upon the 'wall of wires' at my brick apartment (that happened to be a restored abandoned meeting hall). I took a friend to show and we both snapped off some photos. While I'm a strong devotee of 35mm and medium-format photography, he had a digital camera and was kind enough to share some photos.

Overall shot.http://img249.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00340002lt7.jpg

(sigh) This is my gray box. I question Qwest's competence with wiring these. It looks like there's 3 service drops and interface boxes ranging from the 50s to today. http://img247.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00330001zf8.jpg

even closer.

This is one of those cans that they use to junction wires on the pole. Don't know what it's doing bolted to my building.

Chaos ensues.

OMG I've just seen part of phreaks heaven
I wonder how hard it is to conceal beige box wires to your apartment ;D
Or you could screw people over and it would take qwest forever to fix
or just call qwest up and say you have a problem
Hi?

The bundle coming from the top left are the mostly Category 3 cables going up to the various residences above and businesses on street level. The bundle from the top right is the service drop from the pole (I'm surprised there even is a pole in this dense a neighborhood).
The blue Category 5 cables are actually bridging connections between grey boxes.
There's even some doorbell wire used as jumpers in here.

if I traced the cables going to the box labed Unit 6 (mine), I'm sure I could hook some of them up to...other..boxes and see what happens.

There's not much of a way to get caught once it's in place. It's just getting it in without being seen that's the hard part...

they look like a 3rd grader wired them.  maybe they would make nice nests for rats or pigeons, eh?

That's nothing compared to some of the rat's nest wiring I could show you around my town. One of these nights I'll get a camera and do just that.

Amazingly, they do. I have no clue how. Qwest got my line hooked up, no problem. Though of the five or so numbers written on the inside of my unit's interface, none are mine. I'm quite tempted to call them.

yes same theory tachyon in my city NYC most apartment building landlords leave their basements accessable to anyone and since the landlord doesn't live in the building no one locks up the big panels of pairs. and wires and stuff.  when i went on my trip to texas to see my grandparents the TNI cans are in the front lawn and they are practically cracked and left open.
