You could tell them that the phone fraud part of phreaking died out in the late 90's as long distance became so cheap that it became pointless to steal calls.  And even though some people write about theoretical ways of obtaining free calls, very few people actually bother to do it.  All lies, but it sounds good.

Guys, i am having the same problem. I was discussing unsecured printers and routers with my step dad and my mom called me a hacker and told me that i could go to jail, and when i told her it was for their own good, showing the owner of the device how to be secure, my mom said "excuses, excuses" and "Thats still considered Hacking". She needs to learn the def. of hacking sometime. She gets mad when she sees me on www.hackaday.com or i-hacked.com or lifehacker.com or anything with hack in it. My dad thinks phonelosers.org is pretty funny and cool (mostly funny) which i think is pretty funny.

Today my mom suggested i go check out the new cell tower next door and she got really suspicious when i eagerly agreed  , now she says i cant go until my stepdad gets home. So to prepare, i re-built my buttset/beigebox and assembled a bag (camera bag) full of tools and jumpers and a baby monitor (lookout and to listen in on peoples babies)and a multimeter. hopefully there are some unlocked boxes.

Be nonchalant about the tower. Your mom is sending your stepdad with you to spy on you. Even if he's cool, his allegiance is with your mom, not you. Just take a camera with you and say stupid stuff like 'I wonder how this works' and 'I want a telecommunications job someday' so your interest will be attributed to harmless curiosity and fascination with technology.

Same here, only i would call my dad a nerd. My dad bought an Apple II+ instead of a car in high school, and my mom had to drive him around. He was criticizing me the other day because i dont know DOS and get DOS  commands mixed up with Linux commands (LS and DIR) when i was working on installing an OS on a Toshiba Satellite Pro 420CDS. That laptop is almost as old as me (it has a 810Mb hd  ) ! Only a 3 year difference!

Oh, on a somewhat random note, my mom would always ask me if I was doing any "Phone losering" in a really stern, finger-wagging voice whenever she saw me on the computer.

Ha! My mom said the same thing just not in that tone of voice.
