I first stumbled across the PLA in a programming class that I took sometime in the 90's from my friend who had brought in the first five or so issues to class. At first I had thought they were complete bullshit, but I happened to have an old school tape recorder on me so I wrote a pass to go to the bathroom and snuck out to the payphones outside and called the main office and got my self transferred to my teachers room. Then I asked for my friend whom I had given the recorder and he recorded the tones when I dropped some change in. It was a really shitty recording and when we tried it, it still worked, so eventually we began experimenting with other tones such as hitting the phone with a spoon 5 times quickly, or tapping a quarter against the headset, both seemed to work very well against live ops with a little SE. It was a fun day at school and in reality was the first day I learned to redbox.

so, i found out about PLA because for some reason jay from the pk and j show podcast had a promo for PLA radio on their show.  its sad, bc i enjoy the PLA podcast much more than i enjoy the PK and J show podcast, which is entertaining, but not as much so as brad <3

I actually founed this site last year, but I did not join untill this year. I think its part of my guilty concious that I did not attend HOPE this year by accident.

Anyway, I was searching around about hacker stuff and I found thisng about Phreaking. Now, as a hacker, this was much cooler...hacking phone systems. Its kind of like being a guy about football and then hearing about little war.

So while having some decent hacking skills, I am a noob to all of this and was dicking around with search engines finding stuff. Lo and behold I find this place through a link on Firefly's website.

I never left after hearing PLA Radio. That was sone inventive shit. While I am curious abut how to phisicaly do this stuff (except for Socal Engenearing, I am good at that) I like how you show a real application and know-how of this stuff instead of like knowing it an then never using it.

I also like how this site while prankster and show off, dose not give off an elitist feel like other groups and how you premote anyone to join in on the fun if they are willing too.

This is what most hacking groups SHOULD be like.

So thank you and lets enjoy da pranks and misshaps. Maby you can have more use out of that soundboard for next time?  :D

I found it in freshman year while looking, I think, for directions on how to get a police scanner/radio to pick up cordless phone calls. I re-found the site a few months later while trying to redbox. After my junior year, I laid low till now, and that was to find a video clip for a friend, but THEN I heard PLA Radio and now I'm hooked... again.

i ran into some referances to PLA back '91-'92 when my dad bought an external modem so we could get online. at the time i was usally just looking for something to do that might be fun. i tried to get irc to work when first found it but could never get it to connect to a server. after several years later i dropped off the net due getting in trouble @ school for "misusing school property" while in class. parents cut the internet and everyone locally i knew at the time had never used the internet much less heard about it.

then about 6 years ago i had to chance to get back on and been exploring it more since. i had ran across your page again short after my re-introduction to the net. i looked at the page for a while and made a couple trips back to explore it, but never really stayed too long. i had read a couple how-to's on reboxing but never could find anything that would work. now recently since google has gotten big i can find more info on it. one of the first place that stuck out was PLA. i remembered them from earlierin life and wanted to see what info i could glean from the pages. after several times redboxing the local phones i thought i'd come see what new things were going on.

now each time i go out and spot a pay phone the first thing i do is see if the mouth peice is muted anytime either before i dial or after. then i punch in the PLA voice bridge number. sometimes the phone tells me that it can't complete the call, other times verizon thanks me for my business and ask me to deposit my $$ for the call and i just whip out my cell phone with my redbox tones stored and it and have some fun. unfourtanely i haven't been around a pay phone in time to drop in to the PLA voice bridge when anyone is on. hopefully i'll be around one some time to be able to call.

the year was 1997, I had just turned 13 and was searching for red box tones cause I thought maybe I could do that after seeing hackers and the life of a phone phreak was born. I read everything I could find on the page and and built my first beige box a few weeks later. After that I got into the whole 2600 scene and irc then and met up with linear and logicbox and the rest of the gang and was there for the birth of UPL. here I am now 22 and still coming to the site,
