As resident video game man who has learned the insides of the thing directly from the evil corporation them selfs...

The only potential way to avoid over heating is to crack open the box and install your own cooling system and rearrange all the circuits so the heat does not spread around as horrible as it normally does.

However if you do this, you will void your warranties and it does not guarantee not failing from the cheep untested parts they used so they could rush the product a year ahead of the market competition.

If it does overheat however, it can make breakfast pretty well.

the main games I play are Halo 3 and FFXI, and occasionaly I still crank up a lil guitar hero III

I bought the 360 Elite when I got mine (before I really knew there was even a difference... mainly cause I wanted the bigger HD) and I have never had a problem with overheating. My friend Steven has the original 360 and if he turns it on for just a second it'll burn you to touch it. Apparently there were more changes than just a bigger harddrive in the Elite.
