I'd participate. But I don't have an HF setup at all here.

Although, if it is the night of October 3rd or 4th, I'll be at my parents' house and I could hook up my old Yaesu.

Yes, I did years ago, guy I worked with that had a repeater gave me a frequency, but it was boring. Listening to neighbors cordless phones was much more entertaining.

SloFuse is right...ham radio tends to be boring. However, there are a few guys on 80 meters who are fucking hilarious. 3810 khz or 3840 khz is where they hang out.

If you are going to listen 75-meter stuff, you'll need something that can receive around 4MHz in single-sideband, so cheap scanners and shortware radios won't be much use, but if you have good equipment, you can listen in.

Brad, if you want entertaining............there are 2 PITA's in Ham Radio that could start their own losers organizations; they are:

Karol F Madera VE7KFM Saanich, BC -Uses lots of profanity, racism, etc on 20 meters and 75. Lots of people have .mp3 of his rantings - might be some competition for PLA Radio

Glenn Baxter- K1MAN Belgrade Lakes, ME. Runs AARA web and also has lots of social commentry on 75 meters. Hell, he even runs a "call in show" where listeners can call in and be interviewed. (I think he even owns a live tiger as well). People maintain mp3 files on him as well.

Another big name is W6WBJ Billy Crowell, who has a pending FCC action against him for jamming other stations, using an illegal callsign and using profanity on the air. He started cussing me out one evening after I got him with that isgay.com website.

Godot- Yes, Phonemob. Lets phone mob K1MAN on his illegal call in show. He is not shy about broadcasting the phone number either. I also think the number is on the AARA website or k1man.com?

I have a question for hams.  I've listened to ham radio enthusiasts chat on the local repeater frequency before and it seems like normal conversation, just with a bunch of call signs thrown in.  So what makes ham radio so great?  With the internet being available, isn't ham radio just as obsolete as CB radio?  What makes chatting on a ham radio better than just going into a Yahoo or Skype voice chat room?  Yes, I know the retard level is extremely high in public chat rooms, but it's easy enough to set up a semi-private chat or use another service that trolls are less likely to use.  Is it just the coolness factor of using something as old school as radio?  What am I missing?

I think you answered your own question there RBCP. Its the same reason that so many people are tuning in for my lame Blue Box example.  ;D

On a related note, how about the HRLA or HamLA...aka the Ham Radio Losers of America?

To answer RBCP: Free phone calls, free data transmission, and yes...the "coolness" factor of using thousands of dollars worth of gear to talk to someone in russia instead of doing it on the computer for 40 bucks a month.

Think about it though. The internet uses millions of tubes ...its an infrastructure. Ham radio can be done with a Altoids can sized transmitter and a small length of wire up in a tree using solar power.
