The "I Got Banned and Why" Thread.
« on: November 19, 2008, 01:50:48 AM »
Hi.

After talking with the Rogue of all Clowns, I have started a thread on the basis of banning.

If you have ever been banned from someplace, internet or not, you can anounce it here and explain why you think you got banned. Then we can all talk about it.

I have had so many that I do not remember all of them anymore, but I will start off with the latest and most interesting.

Banned From: Defcon Forum

Backstory: After owning an account for over a year now, I finally decided to post there after trying to figure out were it was in the tangled 1997 mess of a website. So after reading the rules, which was hard to do with all the fucked up text, I decided to pick out the forum that was closest to a "general" discussion and for various reasons, I decided to introduce myself.

Were It All Fell Apart: Turns out they do not like intro posts. A mod kindly moved my post to another forum and posted the rule that I missed, even though he forgot to check for Unicode and tags when he copied and pasted. A bunch of forum members became stupidly dickish so I told them my stuff. I ended up re-editing my post and put in the "reason" that the Defcon Forums sucked and were impossible to navigate.

Banned Until: November 17, 2010. You think I killed the relative of a member there.

Worries: I want to do a talk there in 2010 and I hope this piece of stupidity does not prevent me from obtaining speaker-hood. Also, because besides Renderman this was my first intro, I feel like I got off the wrong foot from the West Coast people.

The mods also said I needed to learn some manners. I have no idea what they mean, all I was doing was telling them the truth. Guess truth = manners now. That and I think intro posts with an intro forum are a good thing: Because there are many things I have heard of that affect me and yet I have no idea who invented them or who these people are. Hence Wikipedia.

Ok, enough about me...

I got banned from the Linkin Park forums many, many aeons ago for having a signature with the entire Book of Genesis. I consistently posted one-liners and everything.

It would go along the lines of something like:
Me: "Wow. That's deep."
Someone: "Your signature is too long."
Me: "What?"

I probably have screenshots somewhere.

I got banned from the live ustream of Nobody's Listening this week.  It's a Christian podcast and the host was talking to the people in the ustream chatroom and I said something like, "I LIKE TO MAKE BIG FUCKING POOS!"  His speech shifted to, "Uhhhhh...  Ahhh...   Lemme boot this person...." and then he started apologizing to everyone.

I wanted to watch the live stream, but I couldn't help myself.

I was banned from the SciFi channel's forums a couple years ago. I'm not sure if my account is still active there or not after the ban. I basically posted a topic about how Microsoft had literally hired S.W.A.T. teams to go to local game stores ( fully armed and all that jazz ) for selling modified Xboxes. They said I was just giving a knee-jerk left-wing response for some reason and I rebuttaled with the fact that the stores were selling the games that came installed on the system as part of the package deal.

They booted me for making sense.

I'm also tired of seeing those "FIVE BILLION YEAR OLD ANIMAL DINOSAUR ALIEN ATTACKS" movies on SciFi.

Here, let me tell you a story from early October 2006.

Banned From: GaiaOnline

Backstory: I used to play around on GaiaOnline a bunch. Gaia Towns has always been really glitchy, so I spent a lot of time exploiting random bugs. Eventually, even that got boring, so I started monitoring my network traffic while playing Gaia Towns, to see how it worked. I found that is used this simple HTTP interface for a lot of things, so I started to play with that. This is one of those many explorations.

First, a little background: Gaia Towns is like an MMO, without the fighting. You just walk around, chat, and pick up trash. (Seriously, you can pick up trash.) The map is divided into thousands of towns. The most popular of these towns is the first one, numbered 1000. Inside each town are nine areas. Four of these areas have users' houses. Four more are empty unusable lots. The center area is a town square with a fountain. Users' houses are numbered in the form 21, where 1 is the area, and 2 is the house number in that area.

I found that when placing your house, the Gaia Towns flash sends a request to their servers specifying which house number you chose, such as 21 in 1000. However, it only validated that against existing houses. It didn't check that the the location was actually allowed to have a house their. At first, I started building houses in the areas that were supposed to remain vacant lots. This worked just fine, giving me a house where no one else could have one. But it got more interesting when I tried to place a house in the center area. This caused a sign icon to appear on the map in between areas, and prevented anyone from entering the area. I did this to the most popular area in towns, the center of 1000, and named my house "Alien Spacecraft" to fit in with the alien-related Halloween event that was happening. Chaos ensued.

Banned Until: Forever, as far as I can tell. It has been over two years, and I'm still banned.

Worries: They will realize that that account was an alt, and they will banninate my main account. At least, that's what worried me immediately after. Now, it has all blown over, and I rarely ever log in to GaiaOnline.

Oh, and for those who want proof that it really was me, it still updates the profile's last login time when I try to login. I will log in at the same time as I post this message, so you can compare the two. Note that Gaia uses Pacific Time.

swf bugs ;) i did that too, i loved once on gaia. <3

anyways, *I* am being banned from Remote-Exploit Forums i think.  i simply posted in the "general IT" section about WeakNet Linux v1.0 as i did at all the forums i belong to.  turns out they deleted BOTH posts.  so, whatever. just so you all know, they think they are extrodinarily uB3rl33t there and if they see this post they will metasploit me.  no, hah, (couldnt resist) they think they are l33t, but after befriending a lot of you, i noticed that theres extremely smart H/P people here.
You guys have good coders, peopl who are knowledgeable with different OS's (NONE of which are single minded (thanks for retaliating against my Solaris binge):)) Network Admins, Security Admins, Lock Picking, and most of all, the most important: Phone phreaks.

heh, i just logged into gaia for the first time since january or so and read a comment on my profile:

Banned From: Random Forums Belonging To A Single Troll

Backstory: As  some of you know I am a moderator on letsbeef.com. One of the users there was a constant disruption who cheated by creating TONS of accounts and used them to vote for herself and to vote against her enemies. I do have to give her credit though. She never once broke character and she's EXTREMELY  dedicated. In fact, she built several forums and created users with the same names as on LB and logged in as them and held conversations. You could always tell it was her though because she likes to use large words in a completely wrong context trying to make herself sound smart. And she was a fairly decent cyber stalker. She even followed me here. She could be lurking as a type this. She is certainly one of the greatest trolls I have ever encountered in all the years I've been on the internet.

The Bans: I knew all her boards were nothing more than props so I decided to have a little fun at her expense. The first few times I just went in and spammed her board with MASSIVE images in nearly every thread. After, she banned those accounts and locked the entire board up jamming it up for the  five or six people that she had fooled into thinking everyone else was  real. Then I went in as myself and tried to be a "productive user" but that didn't last long due to the fact that I am, after all, a troll in nature. I pretty much trolled her everywhere I could find her since she was such a major annoyance on LB. It was fun for a good while. Mostly because my idea of a great troll is one who can troll good trolls.
I HATE the bridge.

So this has been lost while typing so many times I think I'll cry. This is my 5th attempt at posting.

Banned from: The Loose Change Forum
Why/Backstory: After Loose Change, 2nd Edition came out, and before LC: Final Cut was announced, I belonged to the forums (recommended by someone on campus). They had sections set aside just for skeptics, which was really used to berate and attempt to convert them. Anyone who refused to be convinced of "their" version of events after a certain amount of time was labeled a shill or spook, and regulars essentially told everyone to not listen to them, as they were obviously government plants. So, one night I was a little drunk, and I was sick of being called a fed because I could employ basic reasoning skills. I pointed out that the LC staff acted extremely defensively, often using harsh discrediting techniques, libel, insults, or anything else possible to silent dissenters. By labeling everyone who didn't agree as an enemy, many people coming into the forums truly believed that the government was actively trying to shut them down, etc. In short, that the government was afraid of what Dylan Avery found and was trying to silence him. I suggested in a thread that the staff was relying on this sort of hysteria to try to sell DVDs (which they were selling at the time), and was banned within the hour. Anyone who agreed with me, or who contested to my being banned, was also banned. Three members of FEMA (openly members about FEMA, too, and not just shills) were banned for good measure. My d0cz got dropped, as did several other "shills" (which I don't get, as using my email address and name, it wasn't too hard to determine I was a college student living in the low-rent section of town).
Worries: some of the diehard CTers I met on the forums went to school with me. Once who I was became public, I thought my ass would get kicked (or I'd just be harassed constantly). After a few weeks, nothing happened, and the whole event was anti-climactic. Since then, LC:FC has been released, and LC's old forums were deleted (after a few former users pointed out TOS violations of sensitive info). There's such a fast turnover, I would be surprised if there are any more than a few dozen regulars from when I posted there (keep in mind, there were already thousands of members then).

When the first thread was deleted a very detailed explanation was given in a private message, yet a second thread appeared some hours later where a somewhat less verbose explanation was given which also pointed to the first private message for further clarification.

As this thread has now been posted, it would appear that further clarification is required.

The promotion of your own "security distro" within this forum has for a very long time been considered something that would be against certain moral principals. Although never put within the forum rules in "black and white" this was always thought of as a "rule" that common decency and respect for the creators of BackTrack, this forum and their other interests would "self enforce".

Let me give you an example

Apple decides to go to Microsoft's forum and start a thread telling people to try their (Apple's) new operating system.

From the deleted threads and this one, it would seem that:
It is fine for Apple to do that.
Microsoft should leave the thread where it is and be fine and dandy about it.

If Microsoft hadn't expressly forbid it within their rules:
Apple should expect it to be ok.
Apple should repost the thread after it had been deleted and ignore the polite private messages they were sent.
Then Apple should then post about it, citing that there was nothing in the rules against it.

I think I have now made the situation clear and feel that I shouldn't have the need to comment further on it.

Thank you.

That last part in the signature is humorous "PLEASE GIVE US MONEY"

Here is my response:

I was just under the impression that

..meant, in English, what it said.

So, Someone had suggested that this *was* in fact a competition type of disagreement, but i brushed it off as i thought that since the distro's were totally FREE OF CHARGE that there shouldn't be "competition" in a free and open source society.  Thanks for clearing that up as I have NOT received ANY private messages for any parrots or other moderators at all.

Free and Open Source Software will be the foundation of my heart forever, no matter what a forum moderator may think; everyone has a chance.  My contribution to those in the Computer Security interest being denied by said single parrot moderator does not have to stop anyone from going to my site and using the software for free.  And I hope that this does not discourage people from contributing there work in the future to more open minded forums/communities.

The "Apples to Microsoft" analogy would have been suitable, ONLY if we were selling our products.  In my mind Apple and Microsoft would only benefit by joining each other.  And you, hating Windows so much, i figured would have given windows part 2 (OSX) a better chance and liked it more.

So with that said in the "MORAL" part of "ADVERTISING" we can all agree that Apple bashes Microsoft more than anything.

Once again, thanks for the shitty public reply.  I haven't received any private messages from you.   Here's proof:

I used to get banned from #jesus on EFnet a lot. They had this bot that would recite bible verses (like you type "!kjv ezekiel 23:20" and the bot recites it). I would have it recite verses which were offensive and they would kickban me for reciting the offensive disgusting bible. Once I had the bot recite verses with "shit" hidden in them and the anti-swearing bot would go to war with the bible bot which would go to war with all the various guardian bots, kicking and banning each other and so on sometimes for days.
