CB radios work for fast-food shenanigans?
« on: August 06, 2006, 03:47:11 PM »
Hey, was just wondering if CB radios work for getting into the fast-food drive through freq.s.
Theres a ton on ebay for pretty cheap, so I was just curious.
Thanks.

No.

CB's operate on 27MHz and on AM.  Fast food systems are either NFM or WFM and are somewehere between 30 and 950MHz depending on the system.  Your best bet for the older systems (headsets with a belt pack) are ham radios or programmable business band radios.  These can be found for cheap if you know what to look for.  The newer WFM systems identifiable by the headset with the buttons on the headphones themselves are harder to get into.  A modified 800MHz Motorola Maxtrac could do the job.  Perhaps a 900MHz cordless phone could be modified as well.

Or just push 27mhz at about 300 watts, that could creep into almost anything the intercom, phones, mics, bathroom fixtures.

When we did the fast food stuff, we didn't use radios at all.  We just hid behind the menu board and yelled.

Ok thanks, some more questions though. (Sorry for being such a "noob".) I notice on some of the radios, it will say something like "136~174 MHz", does that mean the radio is only good for picking up signals that are 136-174 MHz? And would be no good if the fast food place is not on any of those channels?
Also, is there anyway to figure out what freq. the place runs on? I guess you could S.E. this info by pretending to be with whatever company supplys the radio headsets they use or whatever, but just curious if theres an easier way to figure out.

Also, when you say "modified", do you mean tearing it apart and installing different components inside of the radio?

Heres some junky looking China radios that would probably shatter if looked at too hard (but can't beat the price when you're as broke as I am), think any of these would be suitable for the drive thru chaos? store 1 store 2 (such a clever name they have)

Sorry again for all the questions, but thanks for the responses (the worthwhile ones and the sarcastic ones alike).

http://www.bearcat1.com/fastfood.htm is a nice list of fast food frequencies.  If you check Google you'll find lots more.  Most fast food places stick to these frequencies.  But if yours doesn't, you just sit in their parking lot during a busy part of the day and scan.  It shouldn't take too long for you to manually find their frequencies.

Thanks, the help is much appreciated.

I might try my luck at Social Engineering the McDonalds near my house out of their freq, just so I know what to look for when radio shopping for a junk radio that will just barely do the job (gonna check the goodwill one of these days too to see if they have any type of scanners or radios laying around).

EDIT::: Ok I think I know what ya mean by modifying it now. Was looking on eBay and came across a auction for a shitload of freq. crystals. I'm guessing that you just open the radio up, take the current freq. crystal out if that is not for the freq. that you need, and swap in the correct crystal in its place (looks like a new crystal and some solder is all ya need).  So if thats the case, does that mean I could go out and get a ham radio with any MHz range on it, and simply do the crystal swap to suite my needs?
Thanks again in advance to any reply

First off, this is my first post.  I've been coming to the PLA site and forum for years but have never posted anything...so hello everyone.

I too have been working on getting is prank going, but so far with no success.  I've got a modified Yaesu FT-7800R and a modified ADI AT-600.  I''ve been able to manually find the frequencies of several neighborhood drive throughs.  All of the ones I've found are in UHF with one of them using a CTCSS tone which I have and the other two seem to not use CTCSS nor DCS.  The frequencies I have seem to carry both sides of the conversation, both the employee and the customer.  I'm guessing that's the base frequency, should I be transmitting on the headset frequency?  Is there anything else you guys can think of that I should be doing to be heard?
