I'm to lazy to go back up there now, I'll do it latter.  But that bust the myth, of redboxing not working at all anymore.

I think it makes perfect sense that it would work locally.  For it not to work locally, the local phone companies would have to modify/replace every pay phone they own to work like a Cocot.  Or they'd simply stop accepting cash completely, which would mean they'd probably remove/cover the coin slot portion of the phone.  I know LD red boxing worked for me in early 2003 but AT&T assured me that it would be gone soon so I'll be kind of surprised if that still works.

Actually it's really weird that the operator would allow this to happen for local callsdue to the fact that local call coin signalling is done not through ACTS but through DC signalling on the physical line. All RBOC payphones are setup to use that signalling for local calls. That's why having red boxing work for local calls through the op is, as I said before, weird.

Hmmm...actually it might work for a different reason. I know for a fact that the ops have a way of knowing if you put in cahs or not. Just dial 411,  and flash the switch hook when prompted for money. The 411 operator will come on the line and ask you for cash or will ask you what listing you want and THEN ask you for money. Anyways, so she knows exactly how much cash you've put in.So this mgiht be done through ACTS, right? BUT: If you're calling from a payphone with fucked up wiring the operator's display will show a fluctuationg deposited monetary amount!
So red boxing local calls might work because the operator is hearing what she thinks is the payphone making ACTS tones yet the monetary amount on her display isn't increasing. So she probably thinks that the payphone's broken and puts your call through for free. You can see if this is correct by red boxing a local call in a place where you pay by the minute (or 3 minute blocks) for local calls. You won't get asked to deposit anym ore money if you red box a local call there because the call will be going through a normal outgoing trunk fro mthe operator call center.

I live in the great white north (canada) in the province of saskatchewan the main phone service here is sasktel, every pay phone I have encountered has been muted, so I've planned to try this:
phone operator and say " I'm a repair tech out at this pay phone, and the mute feature in the mouth peice is acting up, I dont have the right tools with me, so could you get another repair tech out here to remove the mute feature""

hopefully if this goes well the mute feature will be removed off of my primary pay phone, allowing me to red box... without traveling far.

has anyone ever tried this before? and do you think it will work?

Are you nuts? The telco put muting on the phone for a reason; besides, I've never heard of a muted phone besides a millenium. If it's a millenium, remove the muting yourself (http://www.hackcanada.com/canadian/payphones/millredmod.txt). There is also a more complex method of rigging a millenium (available from the UPL: http://www.phonelosers.org/upl/upl024.html#02), but you're more likely to develop cancer from this method than from the other.

My first question as the op would be, "What do you mean, 'acting up'?" Do you have an answer?

Thank you for pointing my stupidity, I wrote that when I was tired, and possibly under the influence of mulitple "things"
I hoesntly dont have a clue of what I would say after that, I was thinking of saying the phone is muted 24/7 because some punk kids tried to remove it, but then I couldnt call on that pay phone.

So Um....yah..I was kinda hoping the operator would be stupid enough to beleive its acting up, mainly because they talk to people for a living, get pranked called ona  daily basis, and probably does it for minimum wage

so yah, now that I read my post in a clear state of mind, I dont think it would work.... ;D

Never know til you try, though.  If you tried it on 10 different people, one of them might actually take care of it.

All UPL issues are now archived back home at phonelosers.net, as well.
