I'm to lazy to go back up there now, I'll do it latter.  But that bust the myth, of redboxing not working at all anymore.

I think it makes perfect sense that it would work locally.  For it not to work locally, the local phone companies would have to modify/replace every pay phone they own to work like a Cocot.  Or they'd simply stop accepting cash completely, which would mean they'd probably remove/cover the coin slot portion of the phone.  I know LD red boxing worked for me in early 2003 but AT&T assured me that it would be gone soon so I'll be kind of surprised if that still works.

The problem with your theroy Arbie is a operator center doesn't care if it is local or long distance, they still use the same system to check for coins (the tones).  And this is Verizon we are talking about, not AT&T (though I do like AT&T more).  I'm going to head up there latter tonight to make a long distance call and see if it works.

So did you try?  Get a recording?  I really want to hear it done.  I passed by a pay phone again last night and made some more attempts.  I tried several different operators from different companies and they all assured me that they could not make long distance calls with coins anymore.  1+area code+number just gives me an error recording.  The 0 operator tells me they can't do long distance and to dial 00.  The 00 operator says they will only accept collect or calling cards.  AT&T says they don't have any way to accept coins anymore.

This is all in Qwest territory.  The closest GTE-Verizon area I know of is all the way in Portland.  There must be one closer, though.  I'd like to mess around with Verizon and see how far I get with them.

Okay yesterday I passed a GTE phone (I didn't have my recording equipment with me, though) so I decided to try it.  I managed to place 3 out of 3 long distance calls (within the state), and I attempted to place an out of state call the operator said I needed to get a long distance operator.  So I hung up and dialed 00, I got AT&T, they said that they don't accept coins.  So I hung up and dialed the local operator again, I don't got an older man, he placed the call for me with coins, I called again got somone else and they didn't place it for me.  Called again after that and got somebody else and they didn't place it for me.  So I guess your right about the out of state thing, but Local and within the state calls still work.

But you can still redbox Long Distance calls.  You just need to get a confused old guy.

I brought my 10 year old sister along to teach her how to redbox.  She got to hold the recorder while I did it.

I make a long distance (within state) call for this one.  The operator was so nice she didn't even lookup the correct rate.  If you listen you will here her say "I'm not going to look up the rate just put 50 cents in".  She was so nice after she hung up I put the money in anyway.

AS far as the timing of how long to wait before "Inserting" another quarter... Do you usually wait a couple seconds? It would seem with a live op that 2 quarter tones withing 2 seconds would come across as fishy...

Hey, I warned him and I even gave him extra days to come up with it.

I don't think it's that far fetched that someone could quickly insert 2 quarters into a pay phone.  If you shove them in one after the other, they go in pretty quick.  Something I should have added to the recording on the new PLA Radio is the actual sound of quarters going into the slot and the pay phone's mechanical noises as it goes down the slot.  I could have played that in the background of the red box tones.  That would have added a bit of realism to it for the operators.

Obviously not.  She wouldn't be able to hear me or the tones then.  The muted mic problem was only an issue back when doing LD was possible and it was all automated.  Some pay phones were configured to mute the mic until all the money was deposited.
