The PLA forums have been crashing regularly for a long time now, almost always taking my entire server and all my other websites with it. I still don't know what the problem is, I only know how to fix it. Sometimes. Today it was a slightly different problem than normal so it's taken me a large chunk of the evening to get it straightened out. linear's forums are still down, appearing to suffer from a different problem.
I've been thinking about changing forum software. Maybe phpbb or something. I need some input on this from you guys. Do you completely hate the idea of changing software? Or if not, what software would you go with? If I can't figure out why the forums are constantly crashing, I might not have a choice about switching since I can't keep putting this much time into fixing things.
Keep in mind that a switch wouldn't mean we'd lose all the old posts. Hopefully we'd be able to migrate posts and users to a new system. But at the very least, I would set up an SMF archive of the old posts.
