Tracking a number....without the law.
« on: August 19, 2006, 08:58:33 PM »
Hey guys,

For the past month and a half I've been getting these calls from this person proclaiming to be a "Dinosaur". Now I can handle the occasional prank, but this has been going on for a few months now, and its starting to piss me off. I want to find their number but they use *67 so their number shows up as ##RESTRICTED so *69 doesn't work. The intresting thing is on my Verizon Wireless Celllular Phone, I can not trace the call back with *52. I think they may be useing a cell phone but I'm not sure because in one of the voicemails they left me, I heard the little Motorola tone. Anyway, I was wondering if there is any other way I can have the call traced without fileing a complaint with the police, because frankly I don't like dealing with police and if I don't have to, the world is a happier place for me, but I would like the calls stopped, or at least the number so I can show up at their house and have a talk with their parents or order them a bunch of pizzas or something.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

z09

Forward your calls to a friend outside your area code for about a day.  If he gets any prank calls have him *69 it.  Because he is out of the area code it will appear on the phone bill.

Or you can get a free k7 voicemail service and forward your calls to them.  *67 doesn't work for the voicemail, so if they leave a message you will get thier number.

Yes, I am really testing it, and yes it will be worth getting when it comes out.

Anyway, I have my phone fowarding the calls to the k7 VMB the only problem is it wont carry the other persons ANI it carries my phone's ani.  :( This is not cool.

Yeah, in some areas it does that.  Okay try the forwarding to somebody out of your area.

won't that still carry over his own ANI? depending on how exactly his calls are being forwarded, I don't see why it would change.

z09, do you even know what you're talking about?

Nullix, same thing happened to me and a few other people in the PLA very recently. I'd call Cingular and get this straightened out with them. There isn't really much you can do by your self.

The k7.net trick works for me.  I tried it myself.  In my past experiences with ANI, I've noticed that ANI usually passes right through a forwarding number.  But not always.

Another good service to forward your number to is ureach.com.  It's a pay service ($6.99 per month) but you get a toll-free number that takes messages.  I caught a prankster with it years ago.

It doesn't sound like you do.  When you forward your calls to a number depending on your phone company/area either your number gets forwarded or their number gets forwarded.  You have to experiment.  Try it yourself.

Actually, I do. I've messed with the ol' K7 trick before. Since the call never technically terminates to your line, and since K7 actually displays CPN and not CID, you may end up getting the number. However, fowarding to another LATA, or "outside area" as you put it, wouldn't do much for you. If I was to place a call and have it terminate to, let's say somewhere in Alaska, they would still see my number.

z09, experimentation is cool and all, and I'm very happy to see that you're encouraging it, but I think a bit of background reseach and thought is needed here. You said that what I'm doing is considering philosophy. Philosophists and scientists both use actual fact and observation to conclude results and theory, not just assumptions =/.

I'm not going to argue with you.  I've used the trick before I know it works (sometimes).  Just because something is restriced or private doesn't mean you can't get it.

I'm not trying to start an aguement. I'm not even saying you're wrong. I'm simply questioning your findings. You said red boxing works these days, and that's true... But it all depends, as I explained ealier. You said that this "trick" works, and that's true... But only certain situations. You're making your findings out to be 100% fact. Trying to revive an old box isn't going to do much these days. Toll fruad is lame, anyway. =/

[edit] If you come across a carrier that is servicing an area that still relies on a toll center that pirmairly uses ACTS, good for you. There's a reason those are still around. The public switched telephone network (PSTN) has no set "standards", so to say, besides laws and FCC's. That's why a lot of these explotations in modern digital telephony are possible. Most switching systems weren't designed to handle such a level of flexability that the phone industry has adopted these days.

rbcp, what you're actually seeing is the calling party number (CPN) that the last switch is passing off to the terminated line. ANI is more handled by the switching facilities and ESS/SS7. This means that even if you're fowarding calls, everything is still nice and logged, just the way the g0v likes it ;). Since 800 numbers are toll free, meaning you're the one paying the bills, you have the right to see who's calling you no matter what. I don't know why K7 displays CPN, or if that is even legal, but it's definitly a nice little trick. When I was getting prank called a few weeks ago by someone from the PLA (apparently, someone has been getting their hands on the telephone numbers of people who call into the bridge), they spoofed their CPN as well, so I was out of luck.

Your tone appeared to be argumentitive, so I figued you to be arguing.  Your right toll fraud is lame these days, will cell phones and skype out, theres really no point.

Well, I tried the k7 idea but it didn't really work. What I didn't count on them being was stupid. They called my number without useing [star six seven]. I know it was them because of the voicemail message they left and associated with the number. So, in case anyone was wondering:
