Payphone disappearance
« on: October 15, 2009, 03:44:32 PM »
Has anyone noticed the payphones starting to disppear in your city.

I guess they think everyone is a cellphone addict.  Some people with cellphones are like crack addicts, missing

thier fix.  But I do plan to get a super phone with tv, radio , satellite and everything they can put on it.

I think we should keep them payphones around for safety though

There's one payphone left that actually works in Mt. Airy, NC (home of the famous television star OMG Andy Griffith! Also home of the famous Mr. Anderson!!). The rest are still there, resting peacefully in the shadows, untouched by humans for years... but they don't have a dial tone, so I'm not sure why somebody has come along to tear them down yet...

Where I am in Cincinnati, we still have a lot of them all run by Cincinnati Bell, but none of them take incoming calls anymore. They used to all take them.

There is still a payphone at the local YMCA in VZ territory. And three at the costco.

They are disappearing though, no doubt.

There's actually quite a few pay phones out side of various Seven-Elevens and other convenience stores where I live. I'm to lazy to find out any of their numbers though.

A girl using a payphone. Her dad watched me take the picture, but didn't have the balls to say anything about it. I felt like such a pedophile. But really, I just like taking pictures of people using payphones.

It makes me sad to see all the pay phones leave. Yeah we have cellphones now. They're great. They're far and above what they once were plan wise about six to ten years ago. You can still be raped hard on the charges if you go over your minutes or if roaming started and you didn't realize it. But that's just life's little joyous telephone company making their dollar anyway they can.

However I still think it'd be a good idea to keep a few pay phones still active through out various communities. After all, not EVERYONE has a cellphone readily available to them; what if you need to call the cops or a fire department? If for any reason I think that would be a good reason to keep a few phones around. Just for general safety.

Plus there's nothing better than walking by and finding a few quarters dropped in the coin return slot. Honestly. Doesn't that just make your day? It does mine. I got a soda with the extra change I found in a phone once. Back when a can of soda was only a quarter. Man. Only a quarter...

I read an interview from some 7-Eleven guy who said that 7-Eleven is keeping them up for nostalgia, even if they're not money makers.

I'm surprised they're not replacing pay phones with some kind of cellular based phone that only calls 911, just for emergencies or with something like they have on college campuses where you press and button and the police show up.

Anderson, you should go up and start interviewing people that are using pay phones.  Ask them why they're using them, why they don't have a cell, etc.

Did you take a picture of the dad too? 'Cause that would be incest?? I'm confused.

In my town I think they removed the ones outside the local phone company office, but otherwise there weren't all that many to begin with. Places like the library still have one still.

R.I.P. Payphones everywhere. There are still a few pay phones in the Indianapolis, most of which are in a dying mall on the east side of town.
and that's why you don't fuck with time!
