xbox 360
« on: November 11, 2009, 06:34:20 PM »
What's the best way to brick or induce the red ring of death in a xbox 360? Preferably something that would have no obvious effects on the outside of the case, like scoring or melted plastic. Otherwise my only other option is to kill my roommate but I'd rather not do that as I am running out of places to hide bodies.

Maybe 120 vac into the ethernet port or a few seconds in the microwave? Though I'm afraid those might leave a mark.

Try overheating it by putting a bunch of blankets on it blocking the air flow. Just a guess though never bricked an xbox before.

Microwaving would probably have a worse effect than the red ring of death. Take off the cooler if it has one, obviously. Have it run a demo disc or something; you don't want to ruin an actual game. Turning it on and off might be worth a shot if your other techniques won't work. Or you could use outside sources to heat it up, but remember to keep it running.

wraping the ventilation holes with a towel or blanket are good ideas... but if you want to speed that up, you could think about using a heating pad or blanket to add to the over heat factor..

Short 1-second trips in the microwave will give a desired effect than anything longer. I've done this with a laptop to get it replaced before the warranty was up.

Leaving it in longer will create scorch marks that will be evident of a microwave trip or a power surge.

Open up the xbox and swap the green and red LEDs.  Then you can have the red ring of death and still get to play xbox!

Single handedly one of the greatest ideas suggested.

We had a RRoD once and it was because of a faulty power cord.  Maybe there's something you can do to that giant brick on the power cord so that the Xbox itself still works, but it claims to be broken because of the cord.

Maybe shove some staples or a paperclip into the 360's vent holes, turn it on and shake it around, hoping that the staples will bridge across something important.  Or squirt some water into it.

A microwave seems risky.  I've cooked circuit boards in a microwave before and it only took a second for it to make some noticeable damage to bits of metal.  Though I guess there isn't any actual metal on the outside of the Xbox, so you'd probably be okay there.  Hrmm, actually a microwave sounds like a perfect idea.

Why not stage a burglary where your friends Xbox gets stolen?  Then you get the added bonus of being able to sell his Xbox on Craigslist.

Thinking his Xbox is fucked in some fashion and needs the red ring to produce some form of "gimmie a new one!" statement with Microsoft. Maybe.

Naw, I just want to put it out of commission for a while so I can catch up on my sleep since the asshole continually plays on at all hours of the day and night instead of going to class or bathing and stuff like that.

Unfortunately, it is a little bit too big to fit in my microwave and opening the case looks like a pain. :(

I noticed when looking at pictures of it online that there's a lot of shielding around it just inside the outer plastic case, I wonder how effective a microwave would actually be.

A burglary would be believable since shit gets stolen in the dorms all the time, but I'd probably have to "steal" my laptop too and I'd rather avoid talking with the police.

Maybe I can dump 120vac into the thing without going through the power brick.

While you're at it, send 120 volts into the USB ports too.

Looks like an ordinary can of fish food right?

But open it up and what do you find inside?

The Component Video/Audio Input/Output Overvoltage Annihilatory Device or  VOiD for short. :nonsense:

Did you hear about Microsoft permanently banning billions of 360s from Xbox Live because they were illegally modified?  You should modify his console so he can play copied games.  Then just hope that MS bans it forever.
