Pay phone hacking

Hi, new to the forums.
I saw the PLA video about using the 30 something digit code to empty the coin box on pay phones. Let's say hypothetically, I followed it yesterday around my area, on my neighborhood's theoretically Verizon owned payphones, and it didn't work.
Doing something wrong? Is there something else I can do? Hypothetically, of course?

Please go easy on me. I'm new to the whole PLA forum thing.

Whatever's on the payphone I guess. What're different dial pads?
The problem I seem to be having most times is that after I dial a few of the numbers, it starts ringing and goes to automated messages telling me to insert quarters.

Oh simple, put the quarters in, then hit the coin release button, then you get the quarters. Hope this helps.

Don't listen to those assholes.
Sometimes you have to hit '#' before you enter the sequence.

Also, I don't know why this is, but I've been told it helps if the payphone number ends in a prime number.

If all else fails, buy a tone dialer and redbox the tones in.
That will always work.

i had to call the operator and tell her i was a employee there to collecr the coins and that someone put gum in the keyhole. she unlocked it remotely and i entered the code. if the operator asks for a password its "cactus"

Actually newer models of payphones have extra security built in, they require a special initilzation squence followed by a 512 digit code followed by a special stop sequence. Of course a tech would take forever to enter this by hand, so they use tone dialers with 45ms on, 45ms off to unlock the phone in around 50 sec. You usually won't see this as they only use tone dialer with the the code when the key doesn't work.

Here is the special code, you can enter it manually, although it takes a little while:

Don't ask why, but yep, they picked the first 512 digits of pi. Probably because the exact length is hard to guess, but the techs could easily look up the code whenever needed.
