New PLA Communities
« on: June 16, 2011, 11:32:25 AM »
I need help spending some PLA money.  As you know, I like to stuff ads all over the PLA site, which pays for hosting and other PLA things and gives me a little left over to buy hookers with.  I haven't looked at the numbers in awhile, but last time I checked I was making around $50 a month after I paid for website and Shoutcast hosting.  I'd like to drop some of that money on some kind of monthly subscription thing that we could all use.

Last week I made this post which suggested that I set up a Minecraft server for us to play on, but I didn't get any feedback from that so I'm guessing that it wouldn't get used that much.

My other idea is to set up an Asterisk box again and try to make a system for people to play around on.  I think a SIP line for Asterisk is under $10/month.  And if I blew $90 on a telephony PCI card, I could set up a few old answering machines for everyone to hack into.  I could also create fun things like "choose your own adventure" stories that work from a touch tone phone, voicemails and a voice BBS area.  My only problem with that idea is that I'd probably become obsessed with it and it'd eat up a ton of my free time.

Since both of my ideas on how to blow money suck, you guys should give me better ideas.  What could I drop $10 - $20/month on that would be fun for all of us?  Something that we could all work on together.

Here is a Facebook poll where you can add your own suggestions.

I think I can do Minecraft AND Asterisk.  Minecraft is cool because it's truly a group effort to create things.  With Asterisk it's just me creating things. RIght now on Facebook it's a tie between the two.   Personally I'd prefer to go with Minecraft just because that won't eat up all my free time, learning to use it and then creating things for it.  It leaves all the hard work to everyone else instead of me.

I'm still open to other ideas if anyone has any.

You should make a BBS like the old days and let everyone Telnet in to it :)

I've thought about that, but I don't think I could personally get into that enough to be a good BBS admin.  The only thing a BBS has to offer, other than nostalgia, is the games and I was never into the games on a BBS.  The message and files areas would be pointless since that kind of thing is better on the internet.  If someone else wants to set up a BBS and call it the official PLA BBS, I would promote it for them.

We need a PBX, with VMBs and stuff like that. Someone should figure out how to have the old PLA text files be read aloud if we get a PBX

We could read the text files. It'll be amazing. But then again a digital voice is sexy.

Yeah, I'm all for a voice bbs. I was thinking of setting one up as well. Maybe we can end up networking them together somehow.

Also, when I used to mess with Asterisk back in the day there were a ton of companies offering free DIDs. Has that changed recently?
