Area Code Flash Cards
« on: March 14, 2012, 07:44:04 PM »
I've been memorizing area codes for most of my life now.  I recently decided that that's not weird enough, so I created this area code flash card game to help other people learn all of their area codes.

You can either play it as a game, where you get right or wrong answers and it keeps track of your score, or you can just quickly scroll through the cards and view the different area codes.

The one thing that's taking me a really long time to do is complete my database of area code information.  So far I've only completed the area codes in the 200's, and I need to keep going until I reach 989.  If anyone here wants to help, they can by giving me completed lines of info for my flat-file database.  You can take a look at the database to see how things are formatted.  Here is a sample line from it:

207|ME|Portland, Maine|This area covers the entire state of Maine and probably always will since the state's population is less than a dozen.

I'd like to keep things about the area codes accurate, but you can see that I'm not against throwing in random weird things in there too.  Just a line or two, and try not to make it too long or it'll make the answer card stretch out.  Just grab as many lines as you can out of the database, complete them, then either email them to me (rbcp@phonelosers.org) or PM them or post them in this thread.  Wikipedia is a good source for getting trivia about area codes.

Hope you all enjoy the game, and thanks for any help you can give me with the database!

941|FL|Sarasota, Florida|This area code covers Manatee, Sarasota and Charlotte counties in Florida. It used to cover a lot more, but 863 and 239 took part of its glory.

863|FL|Lakeland, Florida|This area code covers the so-called heartland of Florida, consisting of Polk, Hardee, Highlands, Glades, and Hendry counties (a very small part of St. Lucie county is also 863, but they don't matter)

239|FL|Fort Myers, Florida|Lee and Collier Counties in Florida, best known for Naples, Fort Myers, and Immokalee. Yes, I'm talking about the Immokalee with the Indian Reservation and those infamous Mexican farm workers that the college kids hail pitchforks at the food industry over.

I found 781: It comes up in flash cards as Lynn, MA

Massachusetts Area Codes
617 and 857 are Metro Boston - Detailed list of exchanges here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Area_codes_617_and_857
781 and 339 are Suburban Boston
508 and 774 are The South Shore, Cape Cod & Islands
978 and 351 are The North Shore
413 is Western Massachusetts

The state is presently split into two main regional calling areas. Eastern Massachusetts is considered as area codes: 339, 351, 508, 617, 774, 781, 857, and 978. Western Massachusetts is considered as area code 413. Area codes 339, 351, 774, & 857 are used on mobile lines, none or few landlines use them.
