I'm holding down the fort with guitar, bass, trumpet, french horn, mellophone, baritone, drums and I'm also a half-assed pianist and a shitty vocalist.

Are you Ricky Martin?

No.  I have talent.

frog if you learn piano I found some great Crono Trigger songs @ http://www.cerulean-pictures.com I love a whole lot of things from that site, it kicks.

I have an old Gulbransen upright which sucks and a Yamaha digital piano HP-45.  I play about an hour a day, a few times a month I make jackshit teaching kids at a studio.  Whee.

Yay for teaching.
I have a couple of viola students, but I only see them twice a month.
I forgot singing. Since I quit doing that Matt is a Hobo Sex thing, I've actually gotten halfway decent at singing. Next time I have a chance to record I'll upload something.

¿Wha?  You actually have all these obscure things?  You must have harmony coming out your right nostril + melody out de left.

I actually own the trumpet and the Mello.  Other brass instruments I rent/borrow as needed, but admittedly, I don't have the need very often.  In case you guys were wondering, BTW, the reason I can play all these is because if you know one 3-valve brass instrument you know them all.  All the fingerings are the same.  Essentially, the only brass instrument I wouldn't be able to play is the Trombone.

Heh. I said "fingerings."

I thought French Horn is different from the other valve instruments because of the embachures (sp???) and how narrow each one is in range. I'm probably wrong, though.

Brass is teh sux

For the most part, embouchure (I think this is the right way to spell it) really only affects the instrument's tone, by which I mean both the tendancy to go sharp or flat while holding a note as well as the quality of the sound (ie EES IT PREETY??!@).  It only affects range in the extreme cases.  For example, go listen to some of the high notes that trumpet players like Maynard Ferguson and Arturo Sanduval can hit.  Arturo hits fucking piccolo notes.  Those guys have been playing for like 40 years and their embouchures are so tight and well-honed that they can create a buzz high enough to reach those octaves.

But what I was talking about was the valve combinations used to make each note.  Like on a three valve instrument, the first two valves are what makes an "A" whether you're on a horn, trumpet, bari, tuba, etc.

I play the electric guitar (not that greatly) and I played the piano for a while when I was younger, but I've pretty much forgotten it.

Gotcha. I have to take brass techniques next year, so that's a good thing to know.
