Should I Tap My Spouse's Phone?
« on: December 13, 2006, 10:03:40 PM »
Because of this page, at least twice a month I get an email from somebody wanting to listen in on the phone calls of their kids or their spouse.  I either delete them or attempt a smartass reply.  From now on, I'm going to post them in this thread.  Maybe we can all come up with some good answers for these people together.  For now, here are my two most recent emails and replies.

I want to record my girlfriends cell phone conversations. She uses direct connect (walkie talkie) 95% of the time. Can you help, or point me in the right direction?

You need to buy her flowers instead. (I’m serious)

Brad

Hi there
After quite a bit of research i came across your site. I\'m located in Australia and really need some help. I want to be able to record my husbands mobile phone conversations as well track his location.
I know a littl eabout the calling card, am I able to do this?
Can you please help as I\'m really desperate at the moment.

Lisa

Lisa,
You should ask yourself how you would feel if your husband listened in
on your phone calls and followed you around town.  Get counseling
instead.  Or a divorce.  Or maybe talk to him.  Any of those 3 things
make a lot more sense than pretending you're in a spy movie.

Brad

I was kind of hoping for an angry reply on this one.  But she replied within 10 minutes with this:

Sometimes it's just not that easy... thanks for your help.

Lisa

THANKS LISA, NOW I FEEL BAD!

I should hit on her.  I'll look at her IP address and claim to be from the same area of Australia.  I'll say things like "mate" and "crikey!" a lot to convince her.

You'll just have to remove all references to your current location from the PLA site as well as your personal site.

Seriously, though, I don't see why people should need to spy on their loved ones. If you can't trust someone you love, they either violate it enough that you shouldn't be involved with them, or you have some serious trust issues you need to work out for their sake.
If you were to suspect your spouse of cheating on you and want to moniter their calls, and they find out, it's pretty much done for, especially if the spouse really was loyal. What better way to say "I lost all trust in the person I'm supposed to share my life with" than to tap their phones.

It'd be even worse to tap your kids' phone calls. If they know you don't trust them, most kids aren't going to try to earn that trust back. The average teenager will just make a point of rebelling even more. If I knew my parents were tapping my phone calls when I was at home, I'd be home as little as possible.

People should try earnest conversations with their loved ones instead of listening in on their conversations with others.

Why do people always assume you can do this?  Is there an area of the site I've missed that reads something like, "After I tapped colleen card's phone, I listened to her conversations as I followed her around the city with my tracking device." ?
May the forces of evil become confused on the way to your house.

Because of this page,

I made the page so that people could learn how to record their prank calls.  But 90% of the comments and emails I get are from people wanting to spy on family members.

Yeah.. sorry about that.  I failed at reading comprehension this morning, which bodes well for the final I have to take in an hour.

I was thinking:  if these people have legitimate reasons to think their spouse is cheating and they aren't just being paranoid to the amount of ten... it might be a lot simpler to just hire a Private Investigator to check into it than scouring the internet and trying to find the RBCPs of the world to teach them how to hax cells and make tracers.  Aren't cheating spouses a PI's bread and butter?

Yes, but neep, please do try to remember that many spouses also have joint checking accounts. Unless this PI has a front for their bank checks coming in, it's going to be pretty obvious what's up when the target starts seeing checks made out by their spouse to "Insecurimax Investigations", you know?

A PI's true bread and butter comes from people trying to prove infedelity for divorces, paranoid bosses who can't always babysit their employees, tracking a divorced parent with the kids to try to get rid of visitation, etc, etc. None of these people mentioned leaving their spouses. If you're willing to drop money to prove infidelity, it's pretty much done.

At least that's my semi-drunken opinion.

Those are the best types of opinions, so I'll give you credit on that one.

I would like to catch a cheating boyfriend and the only is through his cell phone which is digital CDMA and there is no device out there that I can use?

I replied...

If you know he's cheating then why are you staying in the relationship?  Go find a boyfriend that doesn't cheat and then you won't need to waste your time on the internet looking for spy gear.

we used to use walkie talkies here at my job to talk to eachother but we stopped because they would pick up EVERY single direct connect-nextel conversation in the area and it sucked. "OOH SNAP NIGGAH WHICH AISLE IS YOU IN!? DEY GOT DORITOS HERE IN THIS SHIT!? OOH SNAP DEY GOT DEM DIPPY DIPS FOR MY SHIT!!11"  I always thought those people where kidding.. anyways this situation...It reminds me of #2600 on efnet (which is NOT the real 2600 channel, thats on irc.2600.net) i used to lurk there, and people would come in and immediately say "hi hackers.. can you help me hack my gf's hotmail acct? i think shes cheating on me.." damn it was sad. but funny too. i think the flowers idea Brad has is the best way. what would stop you, if you had the power of electronic survaillence, from snooping on something a little more serious after you did catch your spouse cheating.....these poeple asking you for this info really dont need it. they need file system checked.

just be a private investigator like on 'cheaters'. if you get permission from the owner of the land line, then its perfectly legal. Then, you could make journals, and write a book with minutes from all the juicy calls!

but dont sell to a publisher, you will get raped on the money, and you'll have to do signings at barnes and noble. I will personally go to every signing.

Before you go around using ryanfido's post as legal advice know this: It is illegal to record telephone conversations without at least 1 party knowing that the call is being recorded. Some states require both parties to be aware of the recording. Those states suck.
