Title: Open residential wireless networks
Post by: afreak on January 26, 2007, 06:46:33 AM
So what sort of antics have you done with your neighbour's or general residential neighbourhoods' wireless networks? My usual habit is to see if I can log into their router and turn off their wireless and see how long that goes.

Anybody else?

You're supposed to change the SSID to something derogatory, come on, every knows that.

hehe nice, i check the list of common default passwords and ususally login too, but then set the modem up for remote administration and get the IP.  With Comcast though, if your power goes out your IP changes too.  also if its a cisco router i try the 161 trick. ;p

I have spoken about this on the bridge before, but a buddy of mine once connected to a Safeway Wi-Fi network while they were still unprotected a number of years ago. He was sending e-mails to his buddy using their satellite dishes that Safeway utilizes to communicate with their stores across the continent.

I don't believe he was able to browse or do anything beyond POP and some basic network tasks.

I made a thread about this man!

anyway, I like to try to connect to the router, using the management console,

(192.168.1.1 = linksys)

and use the default name and password "admin"

to do things like change the SSID to "Cactus!"  or "Series of Tubes"

unless I have a real grudge against them, I won't go setting a password, or making their network inoperable,

once I set the SSID to "Get a password U will be HAXED!

Once you're on their network, search for new printers.  Printing out pr0n for them is always fun.

But printing out the highest quality porn is much more expensive to them than printing out a website!  The goal is to cause complete financial devastation to the open network!

there was a network downtown called "Fuck you faggot" and best off all, its not WEP either.
I wan't to go back and change it to something much more offensive to the person owning it. What should I put?

I leave my router open sometimes and packet sniff and see what they are doing and then AIM them and threaten them.. Also you could do this: http://www.ex-parrot.com/~pete/upside-down-ternet.html (http://www.ex-parrot.com/~pete/upside-down-ternet.html)

I leave my FON router open, the "private SSID." By laptop wanted to have me enter the password EVERY TIME I wanted to connect. No one on my street is going to pull into my driveway so they can use / hax my WIRELESS tubes.there are 20+ other open networks on the same street.

Hey Raptor, speaking of the FONm router, have you had any problems with the connection freezing?

I'll be connected to the "private SSID" and after being connected for ~15-30 min. all traffic will stop. I'll still be connected to the router and I'll still have an IP, just that I have to release/renew to reset the connection before I can send/receive data again.

After getting my own connection, I sort of stopped playing with neighbor's networks. I've hosted a LAN party on someone else's connection, but that wasn't too impressive. My favorite project was taking my laptop with me around the city and starting to map out all the unprotected networks. Is there anything illegal about that, does anyone know?

That's what's meant by the term wardriving, isn't it?
It could become illegal someday soon, I can't imagine the federales like the idea.

I've haven't had any problems with it so far, one thing to note is that If you connect to the public SSID, the private will disappear on that computer until you restart the router.

I got an promotional email from FON, saying I could mail 3 routers to 3 people of my choice for free, so as greedy as I am, I sent one to myself, and sold it for $25 the next day. The nice thing is I have access to the configuration online, so I can change their SSID remotely. I might want to wait off on that though, because they know my address!   ;)

Found it.

Log into your FON account and then go to this link:

http://en.fon.com/userzone/fgf.php?page=FGF2a

You just have to make an new account and be logged into it and then follow the link you receive in the email.

I just hijacked my neighbors wireless router. I connected to their network, logged in with admin:admin and enabled remote access so i can connect from my own connection as i have a bas signal to theirs (they live in a new subdivision next door and i am on the other side of city limits). I changed their password to admin1 because it made me, and i scanned for printers. They have none, and all their computers are named weird like planets. I have the option of kicking them off their own network, forwarding different ports, maybe turning one of their machines into a web server. The router is on port 8080 as to be inconspicuous and such. I dont think i want to rename their network just yet, as i am already nervous that i changed the password. They have port forwarding turned on for BitTorrent, those freaking Pirates.

Okay, i just reverted their password. sshhhhh!
