I am pretty new to lock picking, I dont know all the terms and names for everthing yet. I have only been picking for a couple months now. A friend of mine sent me a very nice set of homemade picks and tension tools. As soon as I picked my first lock I was hooked, I now take them everywhere with me. I am getting bored with pad locks and tried to move on to doors. I have yet to pick a door lock. I dont know what I am doing wrong, or if i need to do anything differently from a pad lock. I just cant get the knob lock. My hand cramps up before I am able to unlock it.
Anyone have any suggestions for me?

I always like to put my ear up to the lock so I can hear what's going on as I pick. The auditory sense along with the length I'm extending my fingers gives me a chance to create a mental image of what's going on inside the lock.

Those look like dental tools. Maybe that lock is just a pain in the ass.. did you try more than one door lock?

Listening for the small clicks is natural, but you really cant train yourself to do that each time. You are not always going to be in a place where it is quiet enough to do that. Also, I dont understand what you mean by the length youre extending your fingers?

It's hard to describe. I just use whatever senses I can to create a mental image of the inside of the lock.
I think very visually, so even with my eyes closed I can depict, in my head, the exact way an object is moving.
I also just don't listen to the clicks as the pins drop, I also will listen to the pins rubbing agains one another and the direct contact of the pick and the pins and the sounds of the abrasion.

Maybe you're trying it out on a wrong lock. Send a photo of the door lock. It might be keyed strangely.

I gave up lock picking a month back because I was unsuccessful, I moved on to jimmying and hot wiring cars.

nah, ye cannae only listen te the lock, ye have to visualize it's guts. use the back of the hook and gently rake the pins out and unset them before attempting anything, this allows ye to hear them, and feel them with your brain. then, also, make sure you aren't putting too much pressure on the barrel with your tension tool, those pins are very small, similar to the size of little flints from theose old fashion lighters... ahh.

Some lock manufacturers think they are sexy and shape the little pins like bullets, kind of tapered at the top so you feel as if you set them but you really don;t that's why you can't rely only on listening to them. Also you dont want to practice with a door knob ye bought at a store, because the angles of the situation will be so weird by the time you go to the door to do it, - it will be like you never practiced at all. I say sit in an airconditioned room, put a lockable door handle on your door, and practice on it, over and over and over again until ye can pick it super fast. success of the pick is proportional to the sum of patience and time which in turn have their own scale. if you dont have a lot of time, you need more patience.
The long pick you have in the picture next to the keys.. the top tip would be very useful for "raking" locks, but it makes a shit load of noise when you do so. The bottom tip would be nice for "singular raking" when you see in my old lock pick videos of me moving my hands up and down up and down.. thats what i was doing, you can rake singular pins by doing this until you feel a small amount of torque give way.
buy some of those things grocery stores use for carving up pumpkins that look like little saws, you can easily trim them, they arent brittle and can be used for "bumping" which is an awesome exploit of locks, it's like the distribution of energy from your arm goes into one pin and then applies the rest to the next pin... until they are set.
also if you are seriously interested in doing this and your hand cramps up that fast, i suggest buying one of those little "V" shaped hand exercisers that hair metal band members use to strengthen their hands to play faster scales. - that would be very useful.
when "singular raking," like when you are picking door knobs its okay to let up on the tension tool every now and then, they are very easy locks to pick most of the time, and if you have a jammed pin it will unset giving you a better chance of getting it right. The pins have to go up in order.
read up on it a lot too, theres tons of videos online and the MIT guide to lock picking is free as a PDF. maybe google - lockpicking+pdf - to find a bunch of manuals or whatever people have written.
lock picking is a good hobby, and if you need more help pm me, i have been doing it a long time - trev.

I am familiar with the bumping technique. I had seen a bumping video a while back when I first became interested in picking. I noticed at walmart and at Lowes they only have some dumb kid working the key grinder. Maybe I can get one of them to make me a few bump keys. However I didnt know bumping could be done with one of the pumpkin tools. Thats pretty cool, ill have to try it.
As far as picking the lock, I do use the double sided pick in the picture. Its my favorite. I rake and try to set each pin individually. The only time I think I came close was when I got the knob to turn a quarter turn, then it stopped. It felt like all the pins were set so I am not sure why it did that. I will have to keep trying.

I am in the same boat. I did a lot of padlocks and I successfully picked a real door one time. I had the same hand-cramping problem, what I did was hang my pocketknife on the tension bar in order to keep tension on it while I take a break and shake out my hands. Somehow it's less frustrating when you feel like you're "saving" your progress... even through most of the time I'd end up starting over anyway.

Has anybody experimented with picking combination locks? I found a guide on youtube awhile back, it seemed easy enough.

You have to bruteforce those. Start with 1r, 1l, 1r. Then 1r, 1l, 2r, etc..
