After about a month shipping airmail from the next province over, I've finally got my hands on this excellent book, and it kicks ass already.
-
that book r0x man, way better than his second one. seriously though, i know i have said this to you guys like a 10**6 times, but if you havent watched Fletch the movie or read any of the books buy them, they are about a reported who does all that stuff your Art of Depeption book. - cheers

And I have no ability to fix the typo in this thread title either...I better social engineer that password out of Brad soon.
Aren't you able to modify your posts? I think you can. It's a little paper and pencil icon on the top of the post.
And yeah, great book!
-
I thought I couldn't change the topic title itself but it appears I can. This book kicks intense amounts of ass, but I stopped after the first chapter because if I keep going I won't sleep tonight.
-
The first time this thread existed, ages ago, wasn't the Reception of "...Deception" a lot worse?
It's good for getting into the mindset of such problem solving. Otherwise it isn't that great. Written kind of poorly and endlessly repetitive. Sickeningly repetitive. I never finished it because I got the point after the first half.
-
I'm sure it's a lot scarier for people who've never heard of SE before.
-
Agreeing with Frog here, we've had this discussion on multiple occasions.
I would have rather liked a nice 1 hour film and a small pamphlet with the main drill-down points of SEing.
-
I agree, some of the examples are so cool they would make good segments in a movie anthology sorta thing.
-
It's good to remember that SEing is an art form, not too many books can instill that into it's readers. Especially from a book written by "other people", instead of the author....
-

Everybody's heard of SE before. It's just that it's not always called "SE." I don't think the book's repetitive though. It's just designed to drive home the point that you can get owned 20 million ways to Sunday and you need to know the way to spot, or try to spot, any one of those methods when it's being used on you or your company or your friends and co-workers.

Have you got a copy of "The Art of Intrusion?"
-
No, I think I may since I thought a lot of this stuff was cool. Except for Woz using an unncecessary apostrophe in the forward.
-
i have a copy i will trade you if you want.

Who wrote Art of Deception? ???

Sorry, you can't repeat a karma action without waiting 24 hours.
First post and you're already on my bad side.
-
Kevin Mitnick.
Intrusion was better. Deception was redundant to the point of being boring. Some parts were cool though.
hint: pdf

That's Peter's department.

Thank you mr_doc. :)
gangals I'm confused..sorry for whatever I've done to get on your bad side.
(I was just wondering which book it was, because Amazon had two books with "Art of Deception" in the title.)
-
i actually recently received this book myself. i bought it from barnes and noble and the scenario's in that book are amazing
-
i have also read this book. i think it's perfect for anyone who really wants to learn the way of social engineering. i have it somewhere on my computer ill search for it, if i find it i will share it with you guys. yes intrusion is better for people interested in hacking. by the way did anyone else notice the fact that mitnick sounded like he was on the side of the government but really he was talking about examples like he was on our side. why he wrote this book I CLEARLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT, EVER..
-
Nah, he's a sellout. I don't blame him though, 11 months in solitary will make you go crazy.
-
My own mediocre attempt at humor has been highly amusing to myself.. i don't blame him neither. they probably put him up to it. in his court trial the government looked like pussies when they asked if mitnick had found exploits in the governments systems. he was like yes, they said well can you join the government to make america a safer place. video was hilarious hold on i can find it.
-
i have the e book for instrusion and deception but i bought them both then found the e books :(
-
Art of Deception is when you completely convince yourself that you could completely convince a true-blue lesbian into having sex with you. Otherwise, it's called the "Art of Being Able to Read"
-
Quit it with the necromancy.
-
Thank God you're here! We need him to be b&'d, at least pro tempore
-
I read it. look for a pdf torrent if your library does not have it. Good material. I also got my hands on one of Kevin's business cards. Anyone ever see those?
-
No what do they look like?

Now the point of controversy with this book that jonnyhacker and other eluded to is that Mitnick didn't write it on his own. He paid a bunch of people in and outside of the scene 200 bucks for their stories which he then used in the book, making more than a few grand. I think the profits should have been shared a bit more, like everyone gets a percent instead of the 200 bucks up front. Of course it's doubtful that any of the contributers were going to write or profit in anyway off their old SE stories, so maybe Kevin just provided a forum for people to be recognized. Also he wasn't holding a gun to anyones head.
