Have you tried pulling apart your oven yet?  That's surely got one in it, assuming it's not from the 1970's.

I think this page (http://www.notla.com/archives/2008/03/sacrificial-toasters/) will help you out a lot.

Holy sh!t thats fucking hillarius.
You have no idea.  I spent all day yesterday going through thrift shops and goodwill looking for a cb radio and buying toasters for a dollor each I finnally bought a CB radio off ebay for 30 bucks I knew something sounded fishy when you said it only works on digital cb radios.  The funny thing is I had two trc 217 in my hands opned them i couldnt find the existing crystal and didnt have a digital display so I bought that one instead.
Thanks though for telling me this.
But im still confused did you guys really hack the drive throughs with another method that your not saying or was it all staged.
Good job on this great social engineering feat.

You rule for having an awesome sense of humor about it.  We talked on the drive-thrus using a Yaesu VX-7 and VX-5.  There's a very simple mod you can do to either of those radios that will let you broadcast on those frequencies.  I'm pretty sure it can be found on Google.  The only problem is the $250 - $300 pricetag.

Yeah im not 100% sure I wanna believe that just yet Im gonna do a little research on this Yaesu you speak of.
What really made me believe it was that it was on gizmodo.

EDIT: Do you know what frequency the drive through windows use so i can maybe find a cheaper way to do this?

I can't believe you don't trust me!  When have I ever lied to you??

A Google search for fast food frequencies (http://www.google.com/search?q=fast+food+frequencies&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a) will give you a lot of different sites that list the commonly used frequencies for drive-thru speakers.  None of the lists are 100% accurate and the best way to find them is to sit in the parking lot of the fast food place with a scanner and scan them yourself.

Wow ok my knowledge is pretty much limited to computer software and hardware so bare with me here.

Does one 2way hand held broadcast on all these frequencies(like with an adjustable frequency) or is it one frequency per hand held.

And since I already ordered the trc 241 is there any mod i can put on it to make it useful/fun.

You can always harass truckers.

Tachyon the butt man is right, harassing truckers is about the only thing. There are some cheaper ham radios out there that can be modded for this type of prank, but you're going to spend 170 bucks at the least. The mod is a simple diode removal.

Ok i get how the frequencies and all that stuff work now.
So what sets the Yaesu apart from a trc, besides the submbersivel and weather and other features like that.
My question is why can a Yaesu be modded to broadcast on the higher frequencies and the trc-241 cant be modded?  What makes regulates the frequency in the handhelds? the diodes?

Post by: Lestan Gregor on March 21, 2008, 11:10:25 AM
Im too lazy too look it up right now but i believe thats its done by ic chips nowadays. Pots in the radio can also be adjusted sometimes. It also depends on the intermediate frequency. pm imabadspellor, he knows a lot more about it then i do. I think he's got a higher license than me too.  >:(

bottom line: the only other frequencies you might be able to get out of that cb will be the 10 meter ham band...which will just get you into trouble.

I PMed someone but I don't think the message went through because it didn't say anything, so I'll just post my questions here:

1) You mentioned the VX-7 and VX-5. I only need one, right? And will the VX-6 work, too?
2) I am going to buy it new, so what else do I need, (if anything)? An Antennae, like the one on top of the car?
3) You mentioned that you had to do a mod. Is this the right mod?  http://www.ham.dmz.ro/yaesu/vx-7r-mars-cap-and-freeband-mod.php
4) Since this is really expensive, is there anything else that can be done with the radio, PLA style?

I already searched Google.

When you ask a question here you should say that you already searched Google but couldn't find specifically what you were looking for from now on. That way you don't get the standard "Google mother fucker, do you use it?" response.

I've said it before:

Half the fun of a lot of these hacks and pranks is learning how to do it.

Look on http://www.mods.dk/ for your Yaesu Mod.

I've used the mods listed there to Mod My Yaesu 8900, My Icom 746-pro. and have l another ICOM radio I have.

as far as finding the frequencies, I find all my frequencies using Google. if you come up with nothing after Googling "Fast food drive through frequencies" then you suck

Later

Did you use a toaster crystal to modify it or did you just buy one from Mouser?

but it was never clearly said so my question...
theres no connection between CB's and Drive though frequencies?
and what can you do with a 6.5536mhz crystal?

was it true? just not the toaster thing?
im curious...

hey there I'm not sure where you guys are getting your information at but you are clearly being led along quite the merry chase. first off toasters do not use crystals they use bi metalic springs that react to heat not a piece of finely machined quartz that occilates at a given frequency determined by its thickness when driven by a dc voltage. the TRC-217 does not use crystals it used PLL or phase locked loop combined with superhet freq mixing to get its channels. even if you could get the freq right all you could do is jam the local radios if you got close enough because all CB radios are by definition AM and the drive thru units are FM. I have played pranks on guys in the past and had a laugh or two hell once I had a guy spend three days looking for fallopian tubes to fix an older piece of test equipment on a ship with 5200 men aboard but not a woman in sight. but that was something i did to teach the new guys to think about things and look up anwers for themselves. if you want to learn more about these things an exelent self teaching resource would be the Navy N.E.E.T.S (Navy Electricity and Electronics Training Series) modules they are available for free on line just do a search for them and then download I did the whole series in less than six months and they cover everything from dc to lightwave. hope this helps by the way search for 6.5536 crystal at digikey they have them for about a buck each but they are surface mount which requires some special tools and or skills to install

My own mediocre attempt at humor has been highly amusing to myself. falopeian tubes... when i was a coastie, we used to send the new guys to the other cutters looking for a bucket of a.i.r. or some propwash... once someone actually opened a bunch of glow sticks, and poured it into a spray bottle to give the guy that asked for the "prop wash" kinda funny... especially when the first cutter would send him to whatever other cutters were moored at the base at the time...

What kind of world do we live in when they still sell toasters without safety crystals in them?  It's like we're in a 3rd world country or something.
