Title: PLA Radio Episode #12 - Free Phone Calls
Post by: rbcp on September 19, 2006, 10:08:47 PM
(http://www.phonelosers.org/redbox/pay_phone.gif)This is kind of a short episode, as far as content goes.  The last 20 minutes is nothing but voicemails from listeners.  But in this episode you'll learn a few different ways to easily make free phone calls.  Covered are red boxing, 3rd party billing and charging the phone company for your calls.  Very educational!  You'll also hear some breaking news from a computer hackers convention, a way to listen to PLA Radio on your cell phone and a few miscellaneous prank phone calls.  This podcast is 36 minutes long and is about 32.9 megs.

The episode is cool, but I've found the 11 far more hilarious.
Unfortunately your tips will not work where I live right now, but they have their own ways downhere 8)

Keep up the good work mate, you're great.

I think the NWBell and z09 voicemails are the best.

The fact that I'm turning hundreds of innocent Ipod users into red boxers is damn hilarious.  I wonder how many of them will actually do it.  I wish my statistics would tell me how many of the downloaded episodes actually went into Ipods so I could know how many illegal toll fraud devices I singlehandedly created.

I think the only way to know that is by making a poll; something like "are you recording the show in your ipod for hacker purposes; yes or no"

The statistics will tell u the rest.

I want to lodge a complaint about the long intro on the Skype voicemail, is there no consideration for foreign callers !!!

Best intro theme you've ever made--except you didn't make it. Wunderbar!

Just finished listening to the episode (School Kinda got in the way) Good work on the simple gude on redboxing, and the redbox tones in the beggining of the show are sure to be helpfull too! I think alot of people are getting confused, thinking  that the PLA is just a podcast, rather than a group with alot of history. Although it may bore some of the listeners that are only looking for pranks, I think an episode dedicated to the History and backround of the PLA. I also dont get how some people cant figure out that you were FORWARDING the lines to the pizza hut/Supercenter/ auto zone/ cinema/ tech support places.
Thats why I feel the PLA community that is too stupid to read up on the stories behind these pranks should be educated!

another thing, people like chris, That say OMG My own mediocre attempt at humor has been highly amusing to myself.!1 I listen to PLA radio on my PSP fer 1 day! I R soo LEET! I AM LIKE TEH biggest fan My own mediocre attempt at humor has been highly amusing to myself.!11  Call me at my phone number, its...Wait let me read this here.... ahh.. ***-**** so omg u should PRANK ME! YEah, i would really like it if you could prank me at the number i just gave you...wich is my...house Yeah, house.

And then they call back 5 or six more times.

So as I said, An episode of PLA radio, or prehaps BBB, about what PLA is all about, would be really neat.

Thanks for continuing to make the show!

haha you mean you're not L337 enough to scam free international calls? :D  Living in another country, I thought the same thing though...

Interesting episode, and I now know why you changed VM services - the quality of most of the messages you played were horrible!

Hey, RBCP, if you red box a local call and flash the hook then what happens? I know that if you're boxing a regional call you'll get an op on the line. Don't remember what sort of op though. Does the same thing happen when boxing a local call?

I have no idea.  I've never tried it.  I'm not much of a red boxer these days.  The few calls I've made recently are my first in about 3 years.

Hey, you didn't put the link to the episode in the RSS feed. I have to actually come to the site now to DL it? Manual labor...geez.

Not a bad ep. More interesting than humorous.

I took that out, thinking it wouldn't be needed since the file is in the enclosure tag.  Sorry about that.  I'll be sure to put it back in there on the next show.

Nice work, RBCP. Informative, and a funny idea to turn hundreds of I-Pods into toll fruad devices :). I wonder how fast they'll stop accepting ACTS down at the toll centers after this podcast.

BTW, this will probably be my last post. I'm dropping out of the scene for a while.

Remember that the tones on the show won't work in the Great White North.

Remember that the tones on the show won't work in the Great White North.

About that: From what it seems, there might be two different ACTS systems in Canada--an Eastern and a Western one. The variation between Western tones and what I have found here on the other coast is immense. However, I still haven't had a chance to test the "other" tones, because every operator transfers me for free and I can't find any Proctor Test numbers.

Which igloo-congregation do you hail from, Alpha?

South-Western Ontario, Bell territory.

From what I hear, the Canadian ACTS is called NACTS. I had a friend make some tones for me, but I think he screwed the timing up, because one quarter lasts way longer than the ACTS tones heard on the show. Wanna e-mail me the tones you're using?

And besides, red boxing those damn Millenium fones is hard as hell.

There's a bit on PLA's red boxing page (http://www.phonelosers.org/redbox/) about Canadian tones.  Don't know if it's accurate, but here's what it says:

A nickel is 2200hz, 0.06s on,
A dime is 2200hz, 0.06s on, 0.06s off, 0.06s on, 0.06s off (2 beeps).
A quarter is 2200hz 33ms on, 33ms off repeated 5 times.

Here's a Canadian red box tone:

^^This is a recording of a quarter put into a phone on (eastern) NACTS.

http://media.putfile.com/money-34
^^This is a computer generated version of it, for EXTRA CLARITY, so you can BOX WITH EFFICIENCY.

It probably sounds longer than on the "show" (I imagine you mean PLA12?) because, from the looks of it, NACTS tones are not only on a different frequency but also different timings than ACTS.

If you want to make your own tones, download a program called NCH Tone Generator. You can make .wav recordings of any tone you want: overlapping tones, specified durations of time, etc. It is perfect for replicating phone sounds. It is very easy to find the frequencies for whatever you want to do on the web (here is one site (http://www.hackcanada.com/canadian/payphones/canadian-redbox.html)).

I want you to do something for me, though: find a Centurion or Fortress, call your answering machine or voicemail, and once it starts recording, drop in a quarter, dime, and nickel, with a few seconds space between each. Send me that recording when you're done (I am convinced the tones are different out that way!).

And besides, red boxing those damn Millenium fones is hard as hell.

If you're trying to redbox without passing through an operator, My own mediocre attempt at humor has been highly amusing to myself..

Well yeah, who the fuck wants to talk to those bitches!? They're so snooty. Especially the daytime ones.

Find a Centurion or Fortress!? Hahahahahahahhahahahaaa! I'll go find a yeti and have lunch with a leprechaun too.  ;D (No, really, they don't exist anymore. Not out here anyway. Nothing but Milleniums as far as the eye can see.)
