I remember a time when the Beastie Boys were cool. Are they still cool?
If not, what is the current popular band similar to the Beastie Boys?

The Beastie Boys are out. Justin Bieber is in. :nonsense: :nonsense:

Justin Bieber is dead and Chuck Norris is the man. Get it right. :nonsense: :nonsense: :nonsense:

The Beastie Boys will always be cool, but I don't think they've had a hit in about 10 years now. Intergalactic was the last one, right? Today all the kids love Rappy McRapperson. (Not really, but I just want it to somehow happen.)
-
Nah, their last hit single was Ch-Ch-Check It Out off the 2005 disc 'To The 5 Boroughs'.

Was it a hit, though? I don't think I've heard of it.

Yeah, I think it was at least in the Billboard top 25, I couldn't go very far that year without hearing that track.
edit: Looks like it made #68 on the Top 100, but was number 1 on the modern rock charts.
Their last album, The Mix-Up was a completely instrumental tracks, and I thought it was completely decent. Apparently they're releasing two more albums in '11, which is supposed to be a radical change in their sound. Kind of interested in hearing which shitty direction they go in.
The reason The Beasties have been out of the spotlight for so long was Yauch had cancer.

Looks like they've fallen on hard times and have been pulling stick up jobs at banks at RBCP's neck of the woods.

They are cooler than the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Also as far as a new sound goes I'm a bit skeptical.

Sounds very ill communicationy to me. At least the beats are better than to the 5, something seemed a bit of on that album. I had to listen to the beastles mashups before I could get into it.
However if all those songs are not going to be on hscpt2 then maybe this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-e2c9bF4EA might be a bit more indicative. I'm pretty sure that this is just a DJ Shadow remix which account for the absurd level of samples, but perhaps this is the new sound.
The thing I can't figure out is why oscilloscope is putting out all these awesome documentaries, it's sweet yet a bit mystifying.

Oh. Yauch. I read in this thread you got cancer. Is this true? Do you want me to kill you?

'A Film Unfinished' left me with a kick in the jaw, heart, ass and gut. I'm glad Oscilloscope put out THAT one.

When I was in high school, which was right around when the talkies first hit, The Beastie Boys were incredibly popular among people that had bad taste in music. Now all the kids love the Frank Sinatra kid from that Jersey Shore show.

Last night I watched Fight For Your Right Revisited (http://www.hulu.com/watch/234862/beastie-boys-fight-for-your-right-revisited#x-4,vclip,1,0) on Hulu. It was the best thing I've ever seen in a non-sober state. It kind of makes me love the Beastie Boys again. I had to pause the movie and watch the 80's music video just so I would understand the references to sledge hammers and pie. Do that first:

Justin gay Bieber is in. I still fancy Beastie Boys though, no matter what.

Some time has passed since I originally asked this question, and I did some independent research on the subject.
Exhibit 1: http://www.myspace.com/beastieboys
Last updated: May 2011. Now when I posed this question originally, Myspace was already an uncool website. This was prior to May 2011. They have since updated Myspace with their music. Myspace is uncool, and by the Beastie Boys associating with that website, makes them uncool.
