Better Than Skype...
« on: January 10, 2007, 04:35:26 PM »
Okay, I recently found a program which uses the bases of skype to make calls, only one difference, it is FREE!!! It is a reverse-engineered program, but still, it does not have any viruses or trojans. It is called Voip Buster. Just like in skype, you can call landlines and computers, and the quality is also pretty good, not to mention it cannot be easily traced. You get 300 minutes per week for free, and those minutes reset every week, but If that is still not enough for you, you can change your account and IP to reset the minutes. You can also do conference calls, but to make a conference call, you have to call someone, then try to call someone else after the first call has connected, and you will be given and option to start a conference. (I only mention this because there is no option shown to make a conference). So yah, I'm using it now, and I'm pretty happy with it.

That's amazing, nice find.  It made me sad that Skype's free landline calls trial ended.

I've been using Voipbuster for almost a year now. It has a time limit on the calls and eventually you run out of trial minutes, but it seems like you can just uninstall it and reinstall it and you get to start over.

Nice necromancy.

What would you say, level 46, 47? Necromancy is an easy skill to upgrade, though.

VoIPBuster is an option...but to say that they are better than skype is debatable at best.

They are owned by Betamax and I've read countless horror stories about their sucky customer service.

Evidence suggests that they spam search engines by offering the same service using several domains such as

internetcalls.com
netappel.com
poivy.com
sparvoip.de
voipbuster.com
voipcheap.com
voipcheap.co.uk
voipdiscount.com
voipstunt.com
freecall.com
voiparound.com
owratevoip.com
justvoip.com
netappel.fr
voipstunt.de

And that list is far from being complete.

I personally don't like their service and can't help but think that if a company has to brand itself under so many different domains that something is most definitely wrong.

Personally, I am a Skype user for life. However, before Skype, I was using a program called I-Call (http://www.icall.com). I-Call is 100% free for calls to the United States, however, they charge you for long distance calls. The program isn't all that bad and reminds me a lot of Skype. Sound quality in I-Call has improved by far from earlier versions. It is worth checking out.

Grr, I'm like two weeks late on this (Somehow I missed it.) but how does it decide which calls are long distance? I mean, do you tell it your "default location" or area code and everything outside of that is long distance or does it automatically ascertain that by your IP?

If you visit their website it shows all calls to the US and Canada are free. Everywhere else you must buy credit. Download and try the program. It really is neat!

What does it mean when it says you have a 20 min limit? 20 minutes a call? or 20 min total?

No where do I see a 20 minute limit?

iCall features sophisticated new technology which uses your existing Internet connection (cable, DSL, wireless, or dial-up) and your PC to plug you directly in to the regular telephone network. Stick it to the man - you already pay for your Internet connection, and the Internet is changing everything!

It costs us almost nothing when you make long distance phone calls and we pass that savings on to you by never charging you for calls to the US or Canada.

What do we get out of it? Why would we give this to you for free? The answer is simple - iCall wants you to call the businesses who pay to be listed in our directory, and we'd also love to sell you a headset or dirt cheap international calling rates.

iCall is perfect for everyone - from college students away from home to someone living in Europe wanting to call a relative in the US. Check out everything you get with iCall:
1. Free outgoing calls to the US and Canada
That's right, 100% free. We'll never charge you to make a call to the US or Canada. Other places charge up to 3 cents a minute and restrict who can call who.
2. Free incoming calls from anywhere in the world
We have free inbound access numbers in almost every US area code. Just have your friends call one of of them and enter your iCall extension. Click here for a list of our access numbers.
3. Free personalized voicemail
Everyone should have voicemail, so we give it to you. This may take some getting used to - our competitors charge several dollars a month for voicemail service.

I think if you were Jordi, you wouldn't have your face as an avatar or any face for that matter. But if you want to give me 600 cans of MTN HARDCORE regardless of job, feel free.
