Driver problems r teh gay.
« on: February 14, 2007, 02:11:10 PM »
Well after recent bullshit going on with my computer, now it will not stay on at all without restarting itself over and over again, so I have to run it in Safe Mode.

I think the problem is coming down to some drivers, so I ran the test at DriverAgent.com and apparently 29% of my drivers are bad.
Heres the list of teh bad:

Display adapters - Radeon 9200 (Already running the latest driver on it... which was from 2004 if I'm right)
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers - VIA Bus Master IDE Controller (No clue wtf this even is.)
Mice/pointing devices- Logitech MX510 Optical Mouse (Already using the latest driver... and the mouse is working fine... so again, wtf.)
Network adapters - Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC
Sound, video and game controllers - Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM)
System Devices - VIA Standard PCI to ISA Bridge and VIA Standard Host Bridge

Its beginning to look like Mission Impossible even finding any correct and recent drivers to update to, so I might just have to bite the tongue and buy a Windows XP disk (or borrow one) because I can't find any laying around.

If anybody knows where I can get any of those drivers or maybe which drivers might cause my computer to go into restart mode when not in Safe, then please let me know. I tried switching the setting off that makes it so it doesn't restart when Windows finds a problem, but that just led to the blue screen of death.

Oh, and I was wondering if it was even worth re-installing Windows since that would still mean I'd have to update all of my drivers... but I CLEARLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT, EVER.. I just want this pos to start working right again.

Did you do / change anything when the restarting started? Does it restart when you start any particular type of program? When it does restart are you activly using the computer or even when it is sitting idle?

windows has that system restore feature, might want to give that a try.

however, with it being made by windows, it never worked for me.

No I didn't change anything at all that I'm aware of. I think it was even after a day or so that I was not even home to use the computer because I was staying at my dad's for the weekend.
It restarts about maybe 30 seconds (give or take) after turning the computer on. This is not limited to any single account, and it will go ahead and restart even at the user logn screen.
For like a week it was doing the restart thing, and pulling up some error message once it started. It would restart a couple times and then finally stay on (still giving the error message, but actually staying on without going into another restart). Then I tried System Restoring it to maybe a month before the problem starting happening, but that didn't yield any results.

I really don't know what the hell could have happened to mess anything up. There wasn't any storms or anything during the weekend before it started happening (and I've got a surge protector), and no new programs were installed prior to it happening.

When the Error messages first started coming up, it had something to do with NT Authority shutting it down for something, and somewhere in the message included "C:\windows\system32\services.exe".
Now I am just getting "System has recovered from a serious failure" or something like that, but it still ends up restarting.
Oh, and with both messages, even after closing it, a couple more with the same thing would pop up after closing the previous ones.

Does it look something like this:

http://support.gateway.com/s/issues/2-976684501.shtml

Yeah thats the original message that would first come up. I ran that Wormblaster thing a few days ago but it didn't come up with anything.
Now I don't get that error anymore though (can't remember if I stopped getting it before or after running the WormBlaster).
Now I just keep getting the "This system has just recovered from a serious failure blah blah blah" message, and then it restarts.

Did you check the application logs?  It should give you some insight.

Damn You! I was just about to recommend that to see what poorly coded service was causing all the trouble.

Ok thanks... here are the first two Errors that are logged, both occurred on 2/2/07.

First one------------The Windows Security Center Service was unable to establish event queries with WMI to monitor third party AntiVirus and Firewall.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Second one---------WinMgmt could not initialize the core parts.  This could be due to a badly installed version of WinMgmt, WinMgmt repository upgrade failure, insufficient disk space or insufficient memory.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

All of the Errors are of those two things, some Application Hangs, and some Application Errors.

I Googled up one of the errors and am going to try out a fix. Hopefully this works, if not, the search continues.

Why not?  Have you had trouble with Linux in the past?
