Now that I have Skype I am making prank phone calls via internet.  I would like to know what recording program do you think is the best for recording calls and editing them through Skype.  Something free if you can  ;D

I use a combination of things. induction coils, tape deck, mp3 recorder...

Editing: Goldwave, one of the older versions... LAME with the RAZOR front end to convert wavs to mp3s.

Best software-only application I've found for editing audio is Sound Forge. You easily can find it on Gnutella.

My favorite is Cool Edit.  I use it for everything I do with audio.  You can get it for free from Kazaa or Bittorrent.  It's very similar to Sound Forge.

On my Mac, I use WireTap Pro and ZTerm. I've got an iMac G5 with a built-in modem (unfortunately, I don't think Apple sells the older iMac G5s with the built-in modems) so I use a splitter going from the line to my phone and my computer. With that:

1. I mute my built-in speakers to prevent echo.

2. I open WireTap Pro and ZTerm.

3. I pick up the phone, then type "ATH0" on ZTerm, then I use WireTap Pro and hit record.

4. I dial the number and do everything as normal.

5. When I hang up, I stop recording on WireTap Pro, save the file, and then go to ZTerm and type "ATH1."

I used to use Linux and I didn't have a modem, so I've got no idea how the modem support works in Linux. But I did find this: http://linmodems.org/

Okay I also need something to actually record the call digitaly on my computer.  I don't like using tape recorders because of quality.  So is there any recording programs, for Windows or for Linux.

If you're on a mac you can use CallRecorder, a plug-in for Skype.  It's a seven day trial.  Hopefully someone cracks it soon.

Dude, what are you saying?

The old fashion cassettes produce terrible quailty.  I like to use digital, the kind on the computer, directly.  I just got Audicity and I am editing some of my calls and hopefully I will have them up and running shortly.

@RBCP: I sent you something regarding this to rbcp@phonelosers.org .  I don't know how often you check that account so this is a heads-up  ;)

I am literally rolling around on the floor all crazy-like as I laugh.! Only if you use a deck with Automatic recording Level Control.

Occam's Razor just in:
If you happen to use any creative labs card, the Volume Control software that comes with it has a recording option titled "What u Hear."  If you're just looking for the easiest way to record your pranks, that might be it.

For editing, though, I have a program called MAGIX Music Studio 10, because I do a lot of multi-track musical recordings.  It comes with a lot of plug-ins that would be perfect for cleaning up prank call recordings, if I ever bothered to record any of my pranks.
May the forces of evil become confused on the way to your house.

double click on teh grey speaker in the taskbar

go to file>>properties (or something like that)

go to recording (put bubble)

the thing will change, put a check in teh "Stereo Mix" or "Wave" or something box

exit.

Get audacity, call someone press record. If you see little sound waves showing up it worx if not then u did something wrong... Audacity = opensource = FREE!!
