Free COCOT calls anymore?
« on: June 01, 2006, 11:06:38 AM »
Now that you don't get a dialtone after the other person hangs up, it seems much harder to do a COCOT free call. What I noticed on the COCOT I was using, probably a Protel model, is that when you called an 800 number you heard "Thank you" and then in the background you heard a soft dialtone (it's like it tried to turn the volume of the real phone line down but it didn't fully do it) and then DTMF tones being sent.

Any ideas?

Hook an inline recorder to the pay phone's line and listen to how it dials out.  Used to, some would dial a toll-free number and then a code.  Some might also use a 1010 code. Or maybe you could even dial direct from their line if you bypass the phone.  Just some thoughts, not sure if any of that would work.

Someone needs to get some cocot administration software.

Good idea, maybe I can social engineer a COCOT company out of the administration software? Some things that might make it easier to figure out a way:

1) The COCOT accepts incoming calls, even though it says "No Incoming Calls." When I called it from a cell phone, on both ends, it said "Payphone, Payphone" but then it let me talk on both ends. Maybe the COCOT owner didn't configure it properly, since it says "No Incoming Calls"?

2) When I was trying the 800# hangup trick, I noticed that on one number, I got a message saying that the number was not accessible from a payphone. I don't remember the number as I was just dialing any random number.

3) The rates are expensive which is the second clue that it's a COCOT - 50 cents for 5 minutes, and it also doesn't state Qwest on the payphone. Qwest payphones are 50 cents for unlimited minutes on local calls, if I recall correctly. I believe it also has *11 for collect calls.

4) The payphone looks like this: http://www.payphone-directory.org/7022154056.jpg. One thing about it is that the box next to the coin return thing is black, not metal like some of the other ones I've seen.

It seems to me that most COCOTs are Protel COCOTs which use the expressnet software to control their functioning.
