Monitor won't come on
« on: April 09, 2007, 09:48:54 PM »
I have this spare computer that I'm trying to do something with.  It seemed to be working a few days ago, but suddenly the monitor won't come on when I boot up.  Everything else seems normal.  The hard drive lights up and does it's clicking stuff and it checks for a CD.  But the monitor refuses to switch on.

I checked the video card and the monitor on a different computer and they both work fine.  I also tried a different video card and monitor on this computer.  Still no luck though.  Any ideas?

By that do you mean that the spares moniter worked with another computer, or that you tried another moniter on the Spare and it didnt work?

The monitor and the video card work just fine on another computer.  So those don't appear to be the problem.

So the moniter and videocard work(turn on), but they arent getting any signal?

Something similar happend with an old computer i used to have but the problem seemingly fixxed its self after it was unplugged it for a few days(the tower, not moniter)

You might try replacing the power supply of the computer that the monitor is having issues with.

As Reverend Greed said, check your PSU. Also check your memory.

yeah, could be the PSU. Also, try turning it on while the monitor is still on but before it times out from a lack of signal. Is it an old Sun box?

You could open up the monitor, Fill it up with spread cheese ,then smear ketchup all over the outside and then throw it in the trash can  ;D

Does the computer beep? If not, it my be your RAM, your power supply, your processor, or your mobo. Have fun figuring it out.

Or your keyboard, mouse, OS or solar radiation. Try reformatting your hard drive and replacing all ram first.

I also tried a different video card and monitor on this computer.  Still no luck though.
So if 2 monitors and 2 video cards that are confirmed good don't work on this computer then you have a motherboard problem. Your video slot or the pci slot you're plugging the video card into is fux0red. The monitor gets power from the wall, not the pc. The video signal sent through the monitor cable is low voltage so unless you've got like 4 cd-rom drives and 2+ hard drives running you're probably good.

Edit: if another monitor will work with this computer and video card it might be the display driver or display settings that are bad/missing and keeping the screen dark. BTW, is the screen dark because it's in powersave mode and it's not getting the wakeup signal from the pc, or does it appear to be working fine but just dark screen?

Does it have onbvoard video? What happens when you take out the video card and try the onboard video?
