Virginia School Shooting
« on: April 16, 2007, 09:47:16 AM »
The best part about major tragedies is reading the LiveJournal posts of the people closely involved.  Check out  this link and search for journals that have been updated within the past couple hours.  Apparently many students used their laptops to blog as they hid inside locked classrooms.  Here's some of the stuff I've found so far:

What the fuck, school? What the fuck?

Me: *hiding under blanket with a migraine*
Phone: *Fraggle Rock Ring Tone of Awesomeness*
Me: Ngh? *blurry eyed check of caller ID* ... Hello?
Laurel: Hey, you in the room?
Me: Yeah.
Laurel: Going to be there for a while?
Me: Yeah...?
Laurel: Checked your e-mail?
Me: No...*heads for computer* Should I?
Laurel: Yeeeaaah....
E-Mail: Gunman on campus! Stay where you are!
Me: Again?
Laurel: Yeah.

I am going to get shot ;_;
It was nice knowing you all ;______;

Attn: All crazy psychotic serial killers in the Southwest Virginia area

STOP SHOOTING OUR STUDENTS, GODDAMMIT!

I don't know who's been shot so far, but there are way too many of them.

Post your own findings!  Oh yeah and RIP all you dead kids and stuff.

from http://enchantress422.livejournal.com/

just so everyone knows, both roo and i are okay and so far we have not heard of anyone we know among those shot at tech today

i haven't heard from any gsgis people who are here, but i believe ritchie is away from campus at the moment

from http://greengiant1095.livejournal.com/

Are you fucking serious? Seriously? Seriously?

I'm fine. (if you're wondering, try reading the news, like this AP story)

from http://grannyglasseye.livejournal.com/

just to let everyone know: i'm safe in my house on the second floor with the doors locked.

from http://hazybluedot.livejournal.com/:
Honestly, things are falling apart. It's snowing in mid April, there is the threat of a Wal*Mart moving in, we get multiple bomb threats a week, last semester there was a cop killer running around and now this:

A gunman is loose on campus. Stay in buildings until further notice. Stay away from all windows

Is Blacksburg really a special place any more? It feels just like Springfield, MA.

from http://heart-0f-g0ld.livejournal.com/:
Someone went on a shooting spree at Virginia Tech today. The shooting began in West Ambler-Johnston (West AJ, a residence hall) and ended in Norris Hall (an engineering building).

The shooter is suspected to be dead in Norris Hall and there are many deaths. Wow. I knew the pressure on those engineering students was harsh, but not THIS harsh.

from http://hgmorgann.livejournal.com/:
Sarah's boyfriend is okay. She was under lockdown, but slipped out a back door because she was freaked. There were bomb threats also in the building she was in about a week ago (Torgerson Hall) All the students from Franklin Heights (my home church) are accounted for. I'm a bit in shock. Emma (my best friend/college roommate) and I have been talking on the phone.  I really feel like driving home to VA. A bit irrational, but thats my reaction. How could anyone do that?

from http://hitomishinigami.livejournal.com/:
so today, at about 9:30 am, i learned that there was a shooting earlier in one of the dorms [ambler johnson].
actually, two ppl shot [one dead, one injured] in the dorm.
i was in class at the time.
after class, as it is my routine, i started walking down to the chemistry/physics building from litton reaves.
i stopped on a street corner close to the drillfield to figure out why there were two parades of police cars entering the campus.
then one of the police officers told us to stay there.
i think he meant go inside where its safe, but he was short on words.
i returned to my room after kathleen forced me to turn around and head away from the academic side of campus.
apparently there was a shooting in one of those buildings [norris].
sounds like the count, on this side of the news, there might have been about 6 ppl injured there.
so with classes canceled, campus closed, and police everywhere...
one of the shooters have been captured.

....more information to be included later, perhaps

ok, quick update.
apparently the total is 22 dead.
this. is. bad.

This is a good one from http://jadeddiva.livejournal.com/:
1. Yes, I am at Virginia Tech and was there during the shootings
2. We were in lockdown when they happened in Norris Hall, but we think we heard shots
3. I am now safely home

Basically, this morning some kid went into a dorm, shot his girlfriend and a RA, and then went to an engineering building an opened fire. Twenty-two dead, including the shooter. I just missed the email that went out warning us about casualities. More information is on the VT site and I can't get my email because of that. We're also on CNN and the BBC. It was insanity in front of my department this morning, and honestly...I'm in absolute shock. I've been jittery and nervous all morning and now I finally just want to cry. Not to be like "OMG LOOK AT ME" but there is nothing more terrifying than knowing you're locked in somewhere and can't get out and there are twenty ambulances and cop cars and gunshots and you're watching the news while it's going on outside your window and just...yeah.

I'm going to start drinking. Please keep the victims families in your thoughts because this is the deadliest campus shooting incident in US history and it's really hard to handle that this actually happened right now.

ETA: There are thirty two fucking people dead and a two hour lag between when the first shootings happened and when the others were killed and this is completely unbelievable.

from http://jayfurr.livejournal.com/: I don't have much of any comment at all regarding what happened today at Virginia Tech.  What can you say when something like that happens in your home town, on the campus where you went to graduate school, where your father was a professor?  It's impossible to really wrap your brain around.

My prayers go out for the families of the victims.

from http://joem2.livejournal.com/: Wow, this whole thing didn't really hit me until all the messages from people asking if I'm ok came in. A bunch of friends and two teachers have asked if I'm ok so far.

The only name I've heard so far was Matt Webster. According the the Chicago Tribune he was shot in the arm and is alright now. Not sure if anyone who reads this knows him but that's all I have.

edit - Derek Odell was also shot in the arm and is ok. He was from Blacksburg but I don't think he goes to Tech. That's according to Fox News.

edit - Now Fox is saying that federal officials have announced 32 people dead.

from http://lambspam.livejournal.com/: At least 21 22 of my schoolmates are dead, and I'm not sure if any of my friends are among those.

I'm alive and unhurt, though probably only because I skipped class.

I'm in my apartment, and will provide an update later.

from http://loveyourpeas.livejournal.com/: DON'T WORRY ABOUT ME. I AM OFF CAMPUS AND OUT OF HARMS WAY. DON'T WORRY. I'M SAFE.

from http://mjhansen.livejournal.com/:
Wow, just wow.

I'd suggest getting you news from any wire service for the time being because the news is really, really sketchy right now. At least 28 dead, 20+ wounded. Reports of students jumping out of dorms. It's insane.

And I lived in the dorm where the first shots were reported.

Good lord.

Pray that there aren't more victims. With more reports coming in, it's all just rumor right now.

:-(

There's even more entries on livejournal now... getting flooded with condolences + sentiments / etc...
I'm immediately thinking about Charles Whitman @ University of Texas in '66.

Looking for some AUDIO...

And, in a shocking twist, Jack Thompson is blaming video games for the massacre.

Add to Memories
So here's the deal.

We're on lockdown now, though the news says campus is secure - I've managed to get back to my dorm safely. They've just said on channel 7 that this is the worst college shooting in US history.

user name: _bellisima

so, the school is secure, eh?

glad to hear it.

btw, if the school is on lockdown, how does she get back to her dorm?

did she use a way through someone else didnt think of?

could a STUDENT HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THIS.

My own mediocre attempt at humor has been highly amusing to myself..

I watched the news this evening and they were talking about what steps they needed to take to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the future.  Which just seems stupid.  There's not much they can do if a student wants to go crazy and start shooting everyone.

I'm kinda wondering what was happeneing between the reporting of the first shot at 7:15am and 9am when the other shots were reported.

That was an hour and 45 minutes that they could have already had the school on lockdown and found the shooter.

Quote
# 7:15 a.m.: A 9-1-1 emergency call to Virginia Tech Police reports a shooting at West Ambler Johnston Hall, leaving one person dead and another wounded.
# 9:00 a.m.–9:30 a.m.: Shooter opens fire in classroom in Norris Hall, an engineering building.

It's not possible to stop something like this. If somebody goes crazy and decides to kill people, it's going to happen regardless of what measures are taken.

Oh boy! A PS3 for just picking out an easy multiple choice question.  Hmmm, seems too good to be true...
