A review of emulators on your NintendoDS
« on: June 19, 2007, 07:02:43 AM »
#Well, I worte this today as a review for someone.  Today Emulators are a big thing, and playing emulators #with a portable device has been a long lived dream of mine.  I am very enthusiastic about my video games, #if you haven't noticed.

Well, i sent my PSP to phish-phreak thinking that was it as far as hand held emulators go.  Well, i was wrong.  I bought this:

And boy, was that a mistake!  I found out that this product was TOO NEW to play any emulators, and that Datel would not release product info to anyone interested in writing a driver for it.  (Reminds me of that shitty broadcom card i had) It turns out most (good) homebrew apps like DSOrganise, FlashbackDS, SlyphIRC, IRCDS, etc.. needed to be patched with something called a DLDI driver.
http://chishm.drunkencoders.com/DLDI/
heh, well, Ethermine and I returned it and went to a GameStop and found one of these:

And this worked perfectly.  First i immediately followed the instructions here for setting up FlashBackDS:
http://gtamp.com/DS/flashbackds.php
Well, it runs okay but the sound is really fast, and the frames skip too many making the movement a bit fast! But hey, Im playing FalshBack on my DS Lite!  Then i install the SNES emulator (all of these apps you can get from siging up at ds-scene) and the FlashBack ROM from the SNES version.

Well, this one played perfectly, but i had to reset a few preferences in the "Options" menu.  firstly I set "No vblank" to "Wait vblank" and then "Speed hacks" to "No speed hacks" and it works great!  There is a tiny portion of the screen that is cropped at the bottom but doesnt really interfere with most SNES games except for FlashBack.  so that sucks.  There is another Emulation of the game here that i am going to try today:
http://gpf.dcemu.co.uk/REminiscenceDS.shtml
I'll post results later on this and one more thing...
Ethermine found a website that gave you links.  These links opened up Emule and downloaded REAL DS games for your DS! as generally *.nds
But we couldnt find out how to play them.. Then He found a DS emulator for the DS! and had a FULL version of Electroplankton playing on his DS in minutes!  sweeeet! Mario Kart didnt work though :(  But, later today we are going to test Kirby Canvas Curse! (wish us luck for this is our fav game and its out of print!)
There were a Few ROMS that did'nt work and i found out why.. SNES ROMS include "Mortal Kombat 2 & Mortal Kombat 3," "Yoshi's Island," "Out of this World," and "Killer Instinct."  But there were many NINTENDO made SNES games that worked perfectly.

As far as NES games go I have tried ALL three emulators for NES on the DS and none of them play "Friday the 13th."  Turns out Midori (emulator 1) told me the "mapping" wasn't supported. (NROM,etc)  okay wtf ever. Then NesterDS plays the game but skips so badly you can't control the the character (i was still able to beat Jason on the 1st day cos i am 1337 @ Fthe13th :P) Then NES.nds plays the game almost flawlessly, but the charcater is a big box on the screen.  no resemblance to a human whatsoever!! WTF!? both of my fav games from my childhood are now completely unplayable, for their Mappings, shitty sounds, or speed!

The Music on this thing r0x, and the music player is nice.  You can play your tunes with the lid closed in your laptop bag with headphones :) And the DS goes into sleep mode but still plays the songs.  You can only use Mp3's ripped @ 128Kbps or less, but 128 sounds fine to me.  (the 128kbps assumption was made from the "games n' music" device, and not teste yet on the media dock - The sound would skip at high bit rates)

The Video is nice too, no skipping.  both devices came with software to convert your videos to a dv3 format. or d3v er something.. But i had a nice copy of Ohne Dich from Rammstein that i converted and played on the DS! works great!!

HDD space on these are not bad.  The first card (the shitty "games n music" card) sucked, and came with a MicroSD card that was 128MB.  wtf.  The second device (max media dock) came with a 1GB FC!  for the same price!?? i don't get it?? plus the FC cards are cheap! and The dock is all ONE device with the card on the inside.  The first card i bought (games n' music) would screw up sometimes, because i had to take the game out of the NDS, take the microSD out of the game, put it into another SD shaped card, and then into a USB reader.  sometimes the thing wasnt even recognized by my computer!! and in Linux i couldnt even mount it!  i had to take the whole thing apart and put it back together a few times.  fsck that. what a piece of garbage.

Then, Ethermine decided he wanted one too for his DS, and we found out that almost every Gamestop in our area sold out of them.  Then we went into one and asked the manager to find some for us, and he happily did!  I would recommend getting one from the GameStop instead of ONline because they are cheaper and come with HDD's.  but they are limitied so get one fast, and if one is sold out ask the manager to find one for you in the area.  (Gamestop managers are always nice people)  Also sign up for a free account at ds-scene here:

http://www.ds-scene.net/

All in all, the drunkencoders/codejunkies max media dock has proven to be an awesome product.  one day someone will code a better SNES emulator - I hope.

UPDATEs

I got a call from EThermine saying he got Mario Kart, and Super Mario 64 DS working this morning!

cool, i'd forgot to mention size relations..
The DS games range from like 7MB~40MB (keep in mind the card has 998MB of space which is easily upgradable by buying a bigger CF card.)
The NES ROM is like .2MB~3MB, and thats pretty much the same for the SNES ROMS too.

IRC - The PSP didnt have an IRC client (that i knew of) It had an SSH2 Client, which was hard to use (fumbling with the swiver pad to choose individual letters..) and well, the IRCDS client r0x!!1
It's like awesome, you can save a config file to keep your server settings/nick/etc.. and it has a FULL QWERTY keyboard on the bottom touch screen thats so easy to use with the stylus! >_< !!

well thats about it, hope this helps someone wanting to do something NEW with an old Toy! :)

theres a new trick to getting the nintendo DS roms to work My own mediocre attempt at humor has been highly amusing to myself..  You actually have to run the emulator/open the rom file/then remove the Maxmedia (ds slot NOT THE GBA (that stays in for it holds the game)) and stick a REAL DS game into it, to confuse it!!
and then the ROM games boot fine.  pretty cool, so far we have played wifi enabled games, like bomberman land ds and stuff.  pretty cool!!

Found this yesterday http://www.mrdictionary.net/lemmings/ if you havn't looked yet, it's a port of lemmings to the DS. Put it on my M3 DS simply and it runs fine. I've always wanted lemmings in my pocket for obvious reasons and now I have!
The controls work well moving around the level with the d-pad and everything else the mouse would do with the stylus and touchscreen. It even has options to zoom in and out which helps with the smaller screen of the DS.

Nintendo DS ROMs With a Max Media Dock
List COmplied (and FULLY tested) by Trevelyn.

The trick is to make a directory to run the Roms from
once you've loaded the emulator.  Then, eject the DS
card (leaving the Dock in the gbs slot) and then
putting in a "donor" card.  SUch as Super Mario Bros.
or Yoshi's Island DS.  This Donor card gets accessed
from the Dock for Saving storage.

yeah i havent seen that yet, and i belong to a lot of homebrew DS/DS emulators sites.

there's Amstrad, Arcade, Atari 2600, Coleco vision, Commodore 64, GB/GBC (no GBA that i know of yet), MAC, MSX, NES, SNES, Scumm, Sega Master system, Sega Game Gear, Sega VMU, Sinclair, AND Wonder Swan..
theres also a bunch of PC games that were ported over nicely, like DOOM, Wolfenstein, FlashBack a quest for identity, Warcraft III (clone), etc..
