Dear Ask Jammie,

I'm a vinyl person, but I find it hard to buy new records anywhere. A Dj gave me a few places, I was wondering where you guys thought I should get LPs.

Sincerely,
M (not Judi Dench in James Bond 'M')

Dear Sincerely M,

One of my best friends is a very avid vinyl collector.  I think for specific things, he looks on ebay.  In NYC there are also little record shops, but he always seems to have the most luck on ebay.  If you just want to get your hands on anything... garage sales/ebay/craigslist is probably your best bet.  I'll ask my buddy if he has any other suggestions.

Love,
jammie

Ever notice that when you check album collections at yard sales and goodwill shops this one is always present?

M-26-7, why do you like records?  They're big and the sound quality is inferior to cassettes, CD, and mp3.  I'm not trying to make fun of record lovers, but I'm just curious.  I don't see any advantage to using records.

Some things are just cool and make you feel happy for using them. Like watching Star Wars V on a black and white TV predating coaxial, or using a phone from 1962. Sure they're not the best out there, but they have joy packed into them, and that's what's meant mean by "they just don't make them like they used to."

Frog's right, there is a certain novelty to using records, but there are a few other things.
First of all my parents have a shit load of good records and I can put records on my computer. So seeing as I can either pay 12 or 15 dollars for a cd or 2-5 dollars for the same cd on record I'm going with records.

At least I don't use 8-Tracks.

I agree, records are probably the coolest audio media ever created.  In a way, I miss them.  But there's no way I'd ever go back to them, just because they'd be inconvenient.  A couple years ago I found an old song I'd been looking for with some internet company, but it was only on vinyl.  So I ordered it, borrowed a record player from my brother, turned it into an mp3, and threw the 45 in the trash.  Take that, old technology!

I'm into vinyl too. My dad was a dj when I was growing up, so at my moms house there is about 30 big boxes of (70s-80s) vinyl. I grabbed a random box the other day and there was some cool stuff in there, alot of "promo only" stuff and alot of the records were still shrink wrapped. We have a cool store here in Nashville called The Great Escape. They have tons of vinyl,VHS and 1980s toys.(Star Wars,Transformers) They used to have a web site where you could buy stuff, kind of like Amazon. The store is cool, kind of like a 80s museum, you could spend forever in there. I actually got a record player for Christmas and I played some vinyl that was still shrink wrapped,I think it sounded really good, had a nice rich, deep sound.

Locally we have a video/music store that is really into the trading of all forms of media. More than half of his inventory is used DVDs, videos, CDs, cassettes and records.

The second floor holds about 10,000 or more used records, and Herb Alpert is well represented.
The only acceptable form of commerce is a proper and shady cash-only weapons deal.

"If there's anything i know, it's that people listen to a guy with a yardstick." - Richard Cardo

I didn't dial the wrong number, you picked up the wrong phone.

There's still one thing that records are the best at: enjoying the cover art.
