Vista, Vaio, and Vivisection
« on: July 14, 2007, 05:00:47 PM »
Ok, so I got a new laptop. A Sony Vaio. It comes pre-loaded with Vista and no hard copy of it.

Now, Vista sucks. So I tried loading my copy of XP onto it. The installation, for some reason, failed, but succeeded enough to boot a demented version of XP and completely lock me out of Vista. So I whip out the help manual that came with my compy and it says, to fix your hard drive, step 1: click 'Start'.

I CANT GET TO START, FUCKING GOD FUCKING SHIT.

I tried then to install Mandrake, so I could gut out all the XP files and hope it would let me back into Vista. But then my version of Mandrake doesn't recognize the PCI junk in the laptop, so it won't even start to boot.

Right now I am downloading Knoppix and praying to the heathen gods that it will run.

Does anyone have any ideas, or experience with this type of situation?

When you installed XP, did you format the HDD or just install XP in the same partition as Vista?
Did you load XP by booting into the install disk or did you start the install process from inside Vista?

If the laptop was designed for Vista, it may be difficult to locate device drivers for XP.

Vista came pre-loaded, but with no disk?  What about a restoration disk(s)?  Before we get into anything else - are you wanting to downgrade to XP for sure?

Ok, a little background. I tried installing XP in /winxp, to keep the OS system files separate.

I want to get Vista back, partition the hd, and then reinstall windows xp on the partition.

And no, no restoration disks.

The answer was F10 on start-up. I tried all the Function keys, but I must have tried it too early or too late and it just didn't register. Damn it.

Thanks to gangals for solving the riddles. I love you, buddAy.

Vista's a pretty horrible OS.  I've heard nothing good about it so far.  You should delete your partitions and put XP back on there.  Hiren's Boot CD will get rid of all that pesky Vista stuff.  Maybe in another year or two Vista will be ready for the public.  Right now it's complete shit.

I got a new laptop a few months ago,it came with Vista on it too. I didnt get any restoration disks either, which I thought was odd. I dont like Vista either.

Screw vista, I would format the drive and start with XP pro. Then in a couple of years when they make it better, get a torrent and Crack if you want in by then.

I had a whole big mess with dual boots and Vista rape, so it happened to crash and I decided to just start over.
