Does anybody here know if you can solder those two together?

Yes, with a rod of the right alloy you can braze/solder aluminum to brass. ;)

Just watch!

That's awesome, I'll try that with normal solder tomorrow and if that doesn't work I'll resort to epoxy. This'll be be the best bong ever!

Did someone say bong? You shouldn't make it with metal though. It drasticly changes the taste. If you're not a glass blower and set on making your own pipe can I suggest PVC for the pipe its self? You can get the necessary slide and bowl at any head shop to make a nice bong with. Brass is terrible for smoking out of. The metal tends to hold heat which fries the weed and destroys thc even when you're not hitting. If you're absolutely dead set on making the whole thing out of metal then I would suggest stainless steel as it's less likely to affect taste and if is made thin enough won't hold heat like brass does. Actually, is there any way you could post pics of your building materials? I'm SUPER curious as to what exactly it is you're working with.

It's actually not a bong, but a vaporizer. I'm using a thermos as the actual body with a custom stand made out of brass pneumatic fittings assembled into a kind of tripod. I'm using a cheap soldering iron (never used obviously) as the heating element, and a three hose setup made from washed out pneumatic hose (tomorrow I'll try and find something to be the actual nozzles).

That's not a bad idea. You'll have to post a picture when it's done. That sounds pretty cool

Yeah I'm really taking my time on it and not scratching the steel or anything, it looks pretty damn professional so far (I even MEASURED before drilling holes!), sort of like the Volcano Vaporizer. The design itself isn't much more advanced than the basic glass jar soldering iron model, but it looks a lot better. The only problem is that my largest drill bit is just a bit too small for the soldering iron and I think the next biggest size (not a twist bit, but one of those cylindrical serrated edge types) would be way too big, so my idea is to get some little files and carefully enlarge the hole manually til it works.

I call the prototype 'Sputnik', even downloaded a NASA-esque font for a stencil.

UPDATE: It occurs to me that I could alternatively use a step drill bit to make the holes.

Wouldn't a Russian font be a little more fitting? Here's the one that I use

You can download it here: http://www.1001freefonts.com/rfonts6.htm
It's the fourth one from the top.

You know that's exactly what I was thinking as I typed that. Hmm...the Russian font would also make it look foreign, again elevating it to Volcano status. Since I'm technically an immigrant (since I was two anyway) I could probably get away with saying this has handcrafted German technology as well.

Okay, so first of all it turned out the thermos was stainless steel, and secondly I decided to rough up both surfaces with a file and try some two-part epoxy. Just so nobody's in suspense about the soldering thing.

I've completed construction on the Sputnik save for the final hole for the soldering iron (20 bucks for a step bit??? Come the fuck on...) and the cage to hold the [censored]. I'm figuring I'll make this out of some of that metal plumbers tape with the holes in it for rivets or screws. I have either galvanized steel or copper. I know for a fact that galvanized steel will poison you, but copper doesn't look very safe either. Does anybody have any suggestions?
