I don't get much chance to lurk on the bridge anymore but in the few times I've managed it in the past couple weeks I haven't heard him. Shakalakabubu was on the other day though. I thought he was a sixteen year old girl.
I HATE the bridge.

When I first became a Skype subscriber a year ago, I noticed the id always showed unavailable or 0123456. I was curious as to when they were going to correctly show caller id data. They always had the usual "we're working on it" response. I guess they really were working on it!  http://share.skype.com/sites/en/2007/05/caller_identification_for_skyp.html

Notice how they don't mention the United States at all in this article. I assume this has something with your incident. And on the ANI, I work in a call center and when I call and harass my co-workers using Skype and a software based voice changer (Screaming Bee) it shows up from a 202 area code.

On last night's Phone Show, about 15 minutes before the show I called up some number that my friend Jessica gave me to prank and the person answering kept hanging up and threatening to call the police before I could even say anything.  The next day, she gets an email from this guy.

"My phone starts blowing up literally 3 days after Stacy spilled this all on me. My home phone is getting blown up from a site called phonelosers.org. When you look up the site it is linked with cactiradio which is also part of that Fucking phone show. It went off 15 times last night during the hours of the phone show. So if Brad is doing this Shit tell him to stop."

We couldn't figure out how he made the link between a call where I barely said a word to his wife and phonelosers.org.  We finally figured out that this guy's caller ID was showing him phonelosers.org as the name.  Jammie, who uses the same cable company as these people for their phone service, was able to confirm for me that when I call her with Skype, it shows her phonelosers.org.

So that's weird.  I don't understand how they're able to see phonelosers.org as the name, when the number still shows up as 0000123456.  Isn't the caller ID name always associated with a phone number?  I have the option with Skype to display my caller ID and I choose not to, so my 505-796-4020 number never displays for anyone.  As I mentioned in the first post in this thread, ANI will show people a completely different phone number.  Lately it's always in the 213 area code.

I think I'm going to change my Skype name from phonelosers.org to something else.  Something a little more cryptic.  Like cactus.cactus.cactus or something.  Anyone have any ideas?

seems very strange to me...

from what i understand about caller ID the person who you are calling telephone company uses the CPN to obtain the name of the caller...

does this only happen when calling lines serviced by cable companies?

wonder if everyone thinking that skype is "untraceable" is the reason for this happening... or perhaps skype calls are now required to do this somehow by CALEA or some other law...

i think something that would make people answer the phone quickly or confused would be a good idea, perhaps something using a law enforcement agency like police.emergency or something... or something stalkerish... or perhaps serial.killer or something... escaped.felon....

Now this makes me curious, is this the display name showing up or the skype username?  If it's the display name, this could be an advantage because that is quickly and easily changed.  Experiment.  It could be a great way to spoof a number for free or a business name.

It's my Skype username, which is phonelosers.org.  I didn't know there was an option to change the display name.  I called Jammie at home again today and she said nothing showed up on caller ID this time.  So I guess it's not always going to work.

Very odd.  Skype has a node setup, so when you place a call it's actually going through a number of other connections, most of which reside on other people's personal PC's.  I'm wondering if this has something to do with whether the connection is relayed through a certain data path in relation to the telco giving the caller id service to the customer or not.

It's against the EULA to mess with this stuff, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be possible.  I would think it'd be easy to block a certain range of IP's from accessing skype when calling a certain area.  I have no idea, this is just a theory, but I'll try to play with it.
