So I bought a DS... now what?
« on: August 22, 2007, 10:27:06 PM »
So I got sick of having to plug in my computer and suffer through a boot menu any time I wanted to do some gaming, so I bought a DS used (I also bought it because of the badass reviews and homebrew scene appearing). Now what do I do? Do I need to install DSLinux before I can run any decent homebrew apps, or should I just work with ones compatible with the already existent firmware? Which media dock/bypass/etc should I get? Is there a decent ported/native web browser, or do I need a net connection at home to run the app?

Trev, Phish, anyone else, I'm hoping you can help me out here, because as cool as FF3 is, I'm sure I'm going to get sick of it soon.

is it a ds? or a ds lite? and you cant "install" linux, it runs like a live cd does, but from a "flash cart," and yeah, get a copy of emule a big (fast 80x+) CF card, and a max media dock.  download all the games you want, patch them with max overload (max media dock .nds file patcher) and run them [the patched ROMs] with either the "Triforce" or "Max Overload" emulator.. a quick google search will bring all of these up.  and get an account with ds-scene, it's free, and has tons of great homebrew (homemade) games/apps/browsers/ etc..

i think i ended up with ~150 ROMs working. these better instructions here:

If you have the DS Lite (polar white) And you get teh IRC, web browser, mp3 player, netstumbler, and movies to work (and you CAN) it becomes the SEXIEST PDA EVARRRRRRR!!1

need more help, just pm me. - nintendoDSLoser

You can get a games and music flash card for about 20 bucks from walmart.
It is the kind you put the micro sd card in. It comes with a 128 mb micro card. You can basically run anything from there.

The DS lite actually makes a good PDA? Hmmm...if only it had some sort of keyboard support it'd make a great covert device...

I can think of quite a few situations where appearing to have a gaming device when I really have a portable wireless-enabled linux box could come in handy, I'm sure you could too.

there is aireplay and aircrack for it.  also, for the psp theres an ssh client, but, i havent found one for the DS.  im sure one will be made soon.  When i first bought my DS i knew it would one day be like a PDA.  Theres nice little OS's you can run (again like a live cd but saves settings) from ds-scene, like DS-Organize, or Moonshell, and also DS Linux.

I didn't know they did wireless. That is pretty cool, then.

So I had to order the MMD + CF card ($50 for the two separately on Amazon), and I started downloading my nds games and some movies, but is there a decent GBA emulator for DS? I've been searching for two days, but I can't find anything with a good review or even with decent instructions for patching roms (if necessary)
