smoke bombs
« on: September 28, 2007, 03:48:33 PM »
So I bought 5 lbs of Potassium nitrate (KNO3), and 100FT of green star fuse (heave gauge) off a professional pyrotechnics supply website. I followed the instructions from various websites (Using a 5/4 or 6/4 ratio of Powder to sugar) and melting it together on low heat. We took the gooey brown baste, and inserted a length of fuse, and wrapped in tin foil, then inserted that into an empty toilet paper toll, and duct taped it shut (For 'nade like quality)I  brought it to a clearing in the woods to test. Success! IT worked extremely well. using about 5-6 tablespoons of the Phosphorus and then the correct sugar amount (we used cane sugar, it was all we had available) we produced 3 bombs total, one being much larger than the other two. They produced a massive amount of thick white smoke in about 5-6 seconds of total burn time. Has anyone else experimented with this?

Also, what legal issues might I want to think about? (IE, is it Illegal to Buy/Make/Use/Sell in any particular states)

This is what happens when you are experimenting with combustibles at a young age. The chemical symbol 'K' means potassium, not phosphorus, which is 'P.'

I will hope to have videos for the next detonation. I also had another crazy Idea, I'm not sure if it would work...

Since I'm already using cylindrical tubes for the smoke bombs, I was thinking I could insert a Model Rocket engine (Med. Size) into the center, and fire it off like a mortar round. I would need to figure out how HIGH/FAR this would propel it though, because even though I have a very large area for testing, there are trees at the other side...

Any suggestions?

I'm saving the dish soap for mah nApALMZ

and btw, I just tested a dry mixture for the smoke bombs. Works, but I think its about 25% less efficient.

Yeah, I used to play with model rockets and almost killed one of my friends (well, we're not too sure of the fatality rate, but when it flew past his head it burnt his ear and hair). Model rockets are EXTREMELY unpredictable when they're not in rockets. Also, isn't the whole idea behind a mortar to explode in a poof of color and light (err, I mean fireworks, not munitions). Honestly I'd shy you away from it because it's *REALLY* dangerous, but it did actually help me shape my caution of them, so I'm neutral. If you're going to do it put fins on the rocket engine.

Hell, I think a rocket engine igniting a wad of smoke on it's way up would be kind of badass.

Good luck and don't kill anyone.

Actually this isn't much like a mortar round. Mortar rounds aren't propelled by engines, they're more like bullets, in that they are fired by a firing pin. You'd probably better off either making an actual rocket, shoving the smoke bomb in it and having it float down on a parachute. Either that or make a rocket like a smoke artillery shell that explodes on contact with ground, creating a small poof of smoke, but a quicker distribution of the smoke.

Also to nitpick a little further it's not really a detonation because detontaion involve supersonic combustion, not just something setting on fire.

Alright, I'm going to stop being a jerk about this thread now.

I just used the term mortar because I was planning on firing out of a tube, but I could also get my hands on/make a real rocket, and fill the body/nose cone with the stuff... That would be pretty sick. I will try to get video of future expeditions.
