What kind of weird places have you seen those peculiar metal terminals used for ethernet? They look a little dodgy to use for connecting around a building. I have seen the 110 wire-pinchy blocks used, but you couldn't really use alligator clips on those.

here man, i have seen them in basements of places like call centers and such.  I wouldn't stand around with my laptop and actually connect to it, this is novelty really.  Jeez, im so hungry i wish i were dead right nao.  ouch my head hurts.

Have you tried using only four clips? It's supposed to make the signal a little crappier but maybe not be enough to matter.

yeah mine is for voice, but handles 5e, i found mine on a telephone pole in a green aluminum box.  has anyone ever made a beige box cable to use for a dial up modem? could you hook it up to a Demarcation or TNI on sumn's house?

That's really cool. But I've never seen one of those things on the wall before. Maybe I'm just not paying attention.

That is pretty cool, and the ideas been kicked around for a while. I think most places only run voice over 66pin punchdowns since it kills the cables compliance so im not sure how useful something like this could ever be. Nowadays, most networks are switched, and you wont be able to sniff the vast majority of data.

I did a wireless-modem beige box several years ago, but only really used it to ruin some teen girl's long phone conversations.
