Avishai Cohen: As is... Live at the Blue Note

For anyone who doesn't know, Avishai is a bass player from Israel. He started out with John Coltrane and later broke out on his own, playing as a solo artist and as both as an assisting artist and front-man for different jazz combos. He's currently involved in two big groups, the International Vamp Band and a jazz trio which bears his own name.

I heard this guy about a year ago when he came to WI, and I was just blown away. Hearing it again on album was like another brand new experience. The heads (composed parts of the songs) are wonderful, catchy, and lend themselves to some great jams. The players are all incredibly talented (the drummer and pianist are from Eastman and Juliard, I think), and he has great choices for guest artists.

Favorite track: either Etude (which has both a terribly uneven rhythmical structure) or Caravan (which was performed on a melodica when I heard them).

If you like jazz, especially newer, fusion based music, I would definitely give this a try.
