2600: Off the Hook
« on: February 06, 2008, 03:22:00 AM »
Does anyone listen to the Off the Hook show, on WBAI NY or download it online?
It's a great hacker show, hosted by Emmanuel Goldstien. Give it a listen if you haven't heard it yet. As far as I know, it's the only hacking show on FM radio.

I live in the broadcast area so I listen to it whenever I happen to be in the car at airtime. I think it was better years ago. Nowadays he complains way too much about his cell phone or some problem he had while traveling.

Isn't the name of the guy who does that Emmanuel Goldstien? That would explain A LOT of the complaining.

there are a lot of callers asking how they fix their hard drive after it falls into a lake, but they do bring up some cool topics that don't get discussed in other forms of news media...

They have a decent show, but 2600 itself has become less and less hack/phreak over the years. I don't know how the NYC meetings are, but I hope they haven't lost their roots. The old 2600 mags from the 80's and early 90's had a lot more phreaking and hacking in them. It's not nearly as good these days.

What do they have in them now? I still find enough interesting stuff in them to justify picking it up.

I was kidding I know what's in them, DO said that somehow 2600 is less hack/phreak and I didn't quite understand what he meant.

I still check out recent shows once in a while. I think they are pretty much the same as ever.

Emmanuel is like a modern-day(heh) high-tech Andy Rooney. Many of the topics covered usually involve high-tech blunders in government work, where you are screwed either way.

There also seems to be a high amount of self-censorship where they can't mention this or that, yet Rush, Howard Stern, etc will say a lot more and won't care. A little too much public television in the WBAI I say.

Emmanuel doesn't have the resources, money or ratings to put up as much of a fight that Stern and Rush could.

I'm usually on Off the Hook these days.

I still think it's neat, despite my contributions.

*despite*?

more like it's neater because of them.
