Good programming language
« on: March 23, 2008, 02:41:58 PM »
Hi guys,

I am learning to become a programmer. I am learning Java and C++, however, Java is not appropriate for my needs since I use some platforms that do not have a JVM.

C++ is also bloody difficult too.

Can anybody suggest a good language to learn? Ideally a compiled language that is not too difficult to learn. Any ideas?

Most of the good stuff is written on QBASIC these days.

The sad thing is that you're pretty close to right.

Chris, you might want to check out VisualBasic if you're planning on programming for a Windows platform. Otherwise I hear that Python is pretty easy to learn. I'm about to download a compiler and a few books for that myself.

On a mac and various flavours of BSD in emulation.

I looked into python, but was not impressed.

I wonder if qbasic will work in crossover...

QBASIC is an MSDOS language. There's a version that compiles down into executables rather than the standard .bas files but I don't know if those would even work on a mac or Linux. Visual Basic might with some sort of emulation program. Have you tried PERL or PASCAL?

It's pretty fucked when they're teaching kids to code in VB in computer science class if you ask me.

i think its bad when they're NOT teaching kids VB.  It shows, in a simplistic manner, the basic steps for programming.  I personally use it to write some nasty stuff.  :P

Careful Nod.  He's just a very clever spambot.

VB won't work in emulation sadly. Although, to be fair, that was the 2008 express edition.

Not tried perl but I tried PASCAL. I have lightweight IDE on my mac and it is pretty good. What is perl like as a language?
