so a while ago some guy told me that you could get free calls from a payphone by pressing the metal thing you hang the phone up on. you know the metal tab that moves downward when you hang up the phone?

anyways, he said there was some kind of sequence you could press it really fast and call for free. like to dial 429 you click it 4 times really fast, pause, 2x fast, pause, 9x fast. (i dunno about zero though) anybody know how to do it/what im talking about?

its probably bullshit, but itd be sick if it worked

OMG HAX cactus

I heard it can work with home phones. Does anyone know if it can work with what's left of payphones?

It works with home phones definitely...
If you read Brad Carters http://www.notla.com home page it explains that he did this kinda stuff with his home phone as a kid. It just basically works like a pulse dial phone.

Doing this with a payphone is kind of sketchy...
The phone itself is still dialing out the number by the amount of times you push on the hook.
So why would it make any difference weather you insert money or not... The phone still needs the tone of the coins in order to dial out, weather you use the DTMF of the buttons to make a phone call or you're gonna be a complete retard and try using the hook as the pulse dialing method.

So I'm gonna call bullshit on your HAX!

So

OMG STUPID!

Maybe the payphones are different out in the USA. I know ours out here don't work like that. I've tried a few times but then again most fo the payphones in my city are independently owned. I mean we do have 1 major phone company here but independently owned phones are becoming more predominant.

I'll lok around and see if I can luck out.

I've never successfully pulse dialed a cocot, but I've used a tone dialer on one that disabled its keypad as it waited for money.  This was 10 years ago, though.

I don't think you can pulse dial a cocot anymore.

Technology got way to advanced.

I am going to have to look at this payphone that I know this technique works on, but the easiest way to exploit a COCOT is to dial a toll-free number (usually I use 1-800-CALL-ATT) wait for the other end to hang up, and in most cases, it will drop back to a dial-tone. If the phone doesn't lock you out, the dialpad will be usable and you can go right ahead and dial any number you want.

I believe the AT&T COCOTs are affected by this.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility.

Pulse dialing from payphones was very hard to do, even in the 70s because Western Electric had Hg switches connected to most of the hook switches

How in the hell did we get to this about pulse dialing in the 70's?

Is it not 2008? and we were talking about pulse dialing payphones in this era not back when your mom was changing your ass!

Stick to the program dude, you're running in circles here.

What does mercury switches on payphones in the 70's have to do with not being able to make pulse dialed calls from a payphone here in Winnpeg?

Jesus Christ and I thought I was dumb!

'cause old school phone technology is interesting?  you are on a message board that *may* contain phone phreaks, after all...
