Police scanners
« on: June 28, 2008, 07:28:30 PM »
I'm home, grab the patron and tell em itson.
SO MANY SECTIONS, I forgot how many there are so if I put this in the wrong place move this shit to it's proper home.
Anyway, I'm thinking of buying a police scanner, but only if it is effective against getting caught by police. How much do police radio in and out? Their response time isn't great and if you book out before they even dispatch to your loc I think you're just fine. Any info or experience you've had with scanners would be nice.

You want to get yourself a Yeasu Radio from radioshack, you can modify it by taking out a bit of your moms toaster-

I don't know the ins and outs exactly, i'm sure someone can help you out though!

This is a somewhat complicated question. It depends somewhat on where you live, but for most places you're going to want a trunking scanner. Most police departments now use a set of rotating frequencies so its harder to listen in. A good trunking scanner is going to run you about 300 bucks low end. Since you plan on being mobile, you'll want a handheld or a mobile scanner for in the car. Check some of them out here:

And Im hoping imabadspellor will post here cause he can give you a more in-depth response.

As well as Lestan gregor's good points you should also find out if digital technology is being used in your area and are they using encryption.
Generally P25 digital can be easily scanned but not before you spend some signifcant cash on equip.
In the age of mdt's and digital encryption it's increasingly  difficult in some areas to hear anything worthwhile from law enforcement so do your homework before you buy.
Before you use a scannner to assist you while  committing a crime you might want to familiarize yourself with the laws/penalties if you happen to get caught then decide if it's worth it.
Good luck.

this is what I got:

Radio shacks Pro-95. They don't sell them anymore but had it since 02 and it hasn't done me wrong yet. Also i have never used trunking and i'm still here with a clean slate.
